Bits: Adrian Gonzalez OF-eligible soon?

Boston Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis came off the disabled list Tuesday and homered for the team's lone run. However, the bigger story for fantasy is how manager Bobby Valentine fit Youkilis, rookie sensation Will Middlebrooks and regular first baseman Adrian Gonzalez in the lineup. Gonzalez played right field again! If this continues -- and it appears it will -- the added eligibility will be nice, and this is good news for Middlebrooks owners (although the 25 strikeouts versus three walks is not). As for Youkilis, still available in 13 percent of ESPN leagues, go get this established slugger.

Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Pena hit leadoff Tuesday for the first time this season (and in his career as a starter) and smacked a three-run homer and a single, hopefully breaking out of a monthlong slump. Pena entered Tuesday hitting .116 in May, but he draws walks. Pena is a streaky hitter, so if you drop him, be prepared; Pena hit 10 home runs in June 2011 alone and could do it again.

New York Mets right-hander R.A. Dickey allowed one run in seven strong innings Tuesday, winning for the sixth time in seven decisions. Dickey struck out 11, and although his performance came against the same terrible Pittsburgh Pirates lineup that fanned 15 times against Max Scherzer on Sunday, Dickey is on pace for 192 whiffs this season. This is not your normal Tim Wakefield-like knuckleballer. Dickey should be owned in more than 41.2 percent of leagues.

Chicago Cubs left-hander Travis Wood was promoted from Triple-A on Tuesday, then allowed two hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings. He has given up only five hits in 11 2/3 innings as a starter so far. Wood was terrible in 2011, and even if he remains in the rotation he doesn't figure to win many games, but remember his 2010 with the Cincinnati Reds: Wood owned a .222 batting average against that season and posted a strong K rate, so his skills are there.

Well-traveled Orlando Hudson made his Chicago White Sox debut Tuesday, hitting a ninth-inning single and scoring a run. Hudson is expected to handle third base with Brent Morel on the DL, and although he's not worth adding in mixed leagues, he did steal 19 bases in 2011. If you need speed, he's worth adding in AL-only formats.
