ESPN 60 PG Henriquez pledges to Miami
By Dave Telep
The Miami Hurricanes scored a big commitment today from combo guard Adonys Henriquez (Orlando, Fla./Orlando Christian), the No. 36 junior in the ESPN 60. The Hurricanes were in the mix for Henriquez along with Tennessee and Central Florida.
Adonys Henriquez is the No. 36 player in the ESPN 60 and has committed to Miami.
Henriquez was a guest of Central Florida Tuesday night for its game against Miami, which the Hurricanes won, 72-50. According to a source, shortly after the final whistle Henriquez was on the line making his commitment to Jim Larranaga.
His commitment should pay dividends on and off the court. Larranga has the Hurricanes, currently third in the ACC standings, heading in the right direction and Miami’s large Hispanic population could help Henriquez, who is of Latin descent, cope with being nearly 300 miles from his hometown in the Orlando area.
The hook with Henriquez is that he’s a multi-positional guard. His size (6-5, 185) is uncommon for the point guard spot and allows him to see the floor better. More of a facilitator than scorer, Henriquez should find himself in different offensive situations under Larranaga. From Miami’s perspective, it’s great to have an early pledge from an elite recruit in the Class of 2014. There’s a safety net feel that comes with recruiting the next class and knowing you have a guy already committed. Henriquez is a social guy and he’ll be used to spread the word and be an advocate for Miami's other targets in his class.
