No. 14 recruit Martin set to announce
By Dave Telep
We didn’t see this one coming. ESPN 100 power forward Jarrell Martin (Baton Rouge, La./Madison Prep), thought to be a spring signee, is set to make his college decision.
According to Jeff Jones, the head coach at Madison Prep, Martin will announce Thursday at 1:30 p.m. CT at the school.
“He’s tired (of recruiting) and he’s ready to decide,” Jones said.
Ranked No. 14 overall in the Class of 2013, Martin is one of the best rebounders and frontcourt athletes in the nation. He’s only played half of his high school career but carved out an elite reputation on the AAU and camp circuits.
The thinking here is hometown LSU. Also under consideration, according to Jones, are Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Alabama and St. John’s. However, here’s the reason we think it’ll be the Tigers. To date, Martin has not taken a single official visit and hasn’t been a frequent unofficial visitor either. Typically when the process is as localized as Martin’s has been, the winner comes from within the borders or region.
Should Martin select LSU, it would continue the SEC’s dominance in the Class of 2013. The league is currently responsible for the top six commitments in the senior class (three to Kentucky, two to Florida and one to Arkansas) and Martin would give the league seven commitments from players ranked inside the top 15 of the ESPN 100.
NC State (Anthony Barber) and Kansas (Wayne Selden) are the only other schools with pledges in the top 15.
