In its last three recruiting classes, Johnny Dawkins’ Stanford Cardinal landed five ESPNU 100 players. On Monday, the latest highly-regarded player to commit was small forward Rosco Allen (Las Vegas/Bishop Gorman).

Allen, a 6-foot-9 small forward with a shooter’s touch, visited Stanford, North Carolina and Oregon and looked at UNLV before offering a commitment to the Cardinal. A main component for the timing of this commitment was the recent admission of Allen to Stanford. The Cardinal runs a tight ship academically. Dawkins has one of the most unique recruiting situations of any program in America. They simply can’t get just anyone into school and early admissions are even tougher. While commitments happen in the younger classes, Stanford typically is still trying to gain admittance for senior recruits. It can be a vexing recruiting scenario for a staff.

On the flipside, the Cardinal has a lot to offer. As an elite academic institution, it boasts one of the most well-rounded athletic departments in America. It appeals to a certain type of student-athlete. When a kid like Allen comes along, he’s a must sign recruit because of what he does in the classroom and off the court. Stanford’s recent success with ESPNU 100 talent is significant and the next few seasons will come with the expectations that accompany talented players.
