Sheldon Jeter closes in on a decision

4/26/2012

One of the under-the-radar, soon-to-be spring signees is small forward Sheldon Jeter (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls). Vanderbilt, Wisconsin, South Carolina and Penn State are dueling for his services. He’s visited each school and will take his final official visit to Penn State this weekend.

Spend a few minutes talking to Jeter and you hear a prevailing theme: competition. “I hate losing with a passion,” Jeter said. “Really it isn’t something in my vocabulary.”

For a kid as competitive as he is, one might think flying below the radar would have bothered him but that’s not the case. He’s in a good place mentally. “Western Pennsylvania isn’t the biggest place for basketball recruits,” Jeter said. “If I lived in Philly you might have heard more about me. I don’t really have any regrets about being under the radar because it just made me work harder.”

When it came to academics as a freshman, Jeter took the books lightly and it hurt him. Admittedly, he slacked off his first two years and “it came back to bite me.” Steaming toward the finish line, he’s holding tight to the 3.0 GPA he received last semester.

Jeter isn’t ready to pick a college but on one visit he was taken by the school’s approach. Vanderbilt, per NCAA rules, could not put his name on a cake but the Commodores did come up with something that commanded his attention. The inscription read:

“Winning the SEC championship will be sweeter if we have my main man …”

Yep, Vandy gets credit for that one.

Jeter will decide May 3, a date that has zero relevance. “It’s just a date I picked. There’s no significant meaning.”

When asked to describe the best part of his game, Jeter was to the point. “It’s my ability to get it done, any way any how. Whether it’s scoring, playing defense or diving on the floor to get it done. That’s my attitude.”
