Rangers get: F Martin St. Louis, plus a conditional draft pick (if Tampa Bay re-signs Callahan, the Rangers get Tampa Bay's second-round pick in 2015 in exchange for New York's seventh-round pick in 2015)
Lightning get: F Ryan Callahan, 2014 second-round pick (becomes a first-round pick if Rangers make Eastern Conference finals), 2015 first-round pick
New York Rangers: B+
The Rangers took a hard line with captain Ryan Callahan in contract negotiations, and they stuck to their word in dealing him to Tampa.
They wouldn’t move north of $6 million per season, and with a player who is an injury risk like Callahan, their self control is to be commended even if he’s a guy you can win with right now. It’s a move that will also be remembered the next time the Rangers hit a stalemate in contract talks with a player.
In getting a player back in St. Louis who can pump offense and intensity into the Rangers' lineup, that’s a win. But sending two premium draft picks to add a 38-year-old St. Louis -- along with sending the captain to Tampa -- is a huge price.
