Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock was having a phone conversation with Bobby Orr when the conversation shifted to defensemen, and just how critical having a great one is to winning a championship.

Championship teams need a goalie who makes saves in the biggest moments. They need balanced scoring and a steady leader behind the bench, but it’s almost impossible to win it all without that rock on defense. "That guy" counted on to play half the game in all situations and do it well.

“Every team that wins the Stanley Cup, they have a marquee D-man,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said, taking a moment to chat on Tuesday. “I think of Orr, Nicklas Lidstrom, Drew Doughty, Zdeno Chara.”
