Eight offers are already in for ESPN Watch List defensive tackle Enoch Smith (Chicago/Mount Carmel), but that number will not remain at eight very long.
The 6-foot-2, 256-pound lineman said several big-time BCS programs are at least showing early interest. Among them, Smith named Florida State, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Stanford, USC and Virginia Tech.
As for who could be his next offer, Smith said he would guess Georgia Tech, Michigan, Michigan State or Ohio State would be offer No. 9.
Michigan coaches told Smith he is the ideal fit for what the Wolverines want in a recruit.
“They said they like my performance on and off the field, and that’s what they look for in a football player,” he said. “It’s not all about football there. That is a plus.
“They told me to stay focused on my team (which is 6-1 and ranked among the top teams in Illinois) and the recruiting process will continue, and an offer is likely in the near future.”
The Buckeyes’ Chicago-area recruiter, Mike Vrabel, also told Smith to keep his mind on his junior season as playoffs near as Ohio State continues to evaluate him as well.
“He said he likes my strength and my way of getting to the ball and making plays,” Smith said. “He’s had his eye on me for a while and wants me to stay positive.”
Smith was at Soldier Field this past weekend for Notre Dame’s game against Miami (Fla.) and has the Irish toward the top of his list of favorites along with Cincinnati, Illinois and Purdue.
