EL CERRITO, Calif. -- After seeing what D.J. Calhoun (El Cerrito, Calif./El Cerrito) can do on a football field, Kenny Kahn is happy he is the 2014 standout’s coach, instead of an opponent the linebacker has set his sights on.
“I would never want to play against him, because I see how hard he hits,” the Gauchos’ coach said.

SEATTLE -- Here are five storylines as No. 25 Washington prepares to wrap up Pac-12 play with its annual Apple Cup matchup against Washington State:
1. Proof of progress: With a win Friday, the Huskies will secure their first eight-win season under coach Steve Sarkisian. In fact, it will be the first time Washington has hit eight wins since 2001.
A victory this week and a bowl win to wrap up the season would be the best finish for the program since 2000, when the Huskies went 11-1 and beat Purdue in the Rose Bowl.

During each break in Tuesday’s practice, Washington coaches would jog over to Austin Joyner (Marysville, Wash./Marysville-Pilchuck) to talk about the prospect of the sophomore one day playing for the program.
Toward the end of practice, Huskies head coach Steve Sarkisian pulled the 5-foot-10, 180-pound athlete aside and offered him a scholarship.
“It’s great,” Joyner said. “It’s just good to know I’m capable of playing at the next level and that other people see it, too. It’s not just I think I could be a D-I athlete. Now that I have the first offer, I’ve realized what I’m able to do.”

SEATTLE -- Steve Sarkisian’s speech got through to his players. Washington’s coach described his halftime talk as “tough love.” Whatever he said, it worked.
After being held to a touchdown over the first two quarters, the Huskies erupted for 31 second-half points to pull away from Colorado, 38-3, on the road Saturday.
Washington now has an opportunity to build on its four-game winning streak with a victory Friday at Washington State in the Apple Cup.

Recapping the weekend's prime-time performances from Washington's 2013 recruiting class:
Darrell Daniels (Oakley, Calif./Freedom): Impressive performances are nothing new for the receiver. He shows up in the highlights just about every week. However, during a 34-14 win over Antioch (Calif.) Deer Valley, he took his talent to another level, hauling in 11 catches for 194 yards and a touchdown.
Troy Williams (Harbor City, Calif./Narbonne): The quarterback has had plenty of big games this season, but he only needed one half to post big numbers against Los Angeles Washington Prep. He completed 9 of 11 passes for 232 yards and 5 touchdowns in the first two quarters. He also rushed for a 23-yard touchdown.

SEATTLE -- Here are five storylines as Washington prepares to play No. 7 Oregon State this weekend at CenturyLink Field:
1. Can Washington stop its slide? After being outscored 128-52 over the last three games, Washington is looking to rebound against Oregon State. The Huskies need a win over a ranked opponent to stop their three-game losing streak.
2. Breaking the 21-point plateau: Through five games against FBS opponents this season, the Huskies have yet to score more than 21 points. Finding a way to get the offense going will prove pivotal against the Beavers this week. Oregon State won’t make it easy on Washington. The Beavers have allowed more than 21 points twice -- 35 at Arizona and 24 at BYU -- through six games.

SEATTLE -- When Washington knocked off Stanford a month ago, the common thought was that was the win that would propel the Huskies to a successful season.
After surviving their first six games with a 3-3 record, the Huskies’ trip to Arizona was an opportunity to set a standard that would establish an expectation for the program’s final five games in 2012.
Instead of a convincing win, though, Washington was handed a 52-17 loss. After three straight defeats and with No. 7 Oregon State traveling to CenturyLink Field this weekend, the Huskies now face a tough road as they work to become bowl eligible.
