EL CERRITO, Calif. -- When Jalen Harvey (El Cerrito, Calif./El Cerrito) jogged onto the field, he wore a beanie and a long-sleeved black Nike shirt with “EC” printed on the front.

The turf was blanketed in sunlight, but it was a mid-December morning and the junior receiver was cold. He borrowed a red sweatshirt from a teammate.

This group of Gauchos, led by a 2014 quintet of college prospects Harvey calls “the Fab Five,” is close. Joined by linebacker D.J. Calhoun, cornerback Adarius Pickett, quarterback Keilan Benjamin and his twin brother, receiver Keith Benjamin, the group sets a high standard that kept the recruits working throughout the season.

EL CERRITO, Calif. -- For Adarius Pickett, football season never truly ends.

Sure, El Cerrito (Calif.) High School played its final game of the season in early December, but the 5-foot-11, 172-pound junior cornerback is already working toward the future.

The desire to improve and erase the feeling of a 31-28 loss to Kentfield (Calif.) Marin Catholic in the CIF North Coast Section Division III championship game continues to push the 2014 prospect.

EL CERRITO, Calif. -- A little after 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning, a man walked past El Cerrito High School with a pair of dogs -- one was a Husky.

I took that as a good sign for the second day of my brief Northern California adventure.
