Arizona ATH Whiley's stock is on the rise
By Erik McKinney
It's possible that few players helped their stock more than Tyler Whiley (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) during this past weekend's NLA 7-on-7 tournament in Las Vegas.
Tyler Whiley said some schools are recruiting him to play defense, others as an athlete.
The 6-foot, 175-pound athlete was a dominant offensive force for a loaded team featuring some of Arizona's top talent. He caught virtually every ball thrown his way and spent most of Saturday celebrating in the end zone, as his team, Those Guys, went undefeated and unscored upon.
When asked if he came out to the tournament with a purpose to prove himself, Whiley nodded in agreement.
“I want to win,” Whiley said. “I want to showcase our team. I want to show people that the West Coast has good athletes, and it's not just about Florida and Texas.”
While Those Guys came up short in their quest for the title, they did prove that the talent in Arizona is real for the 2014 class, and Whiley is toward the top of that list. So far, he holds offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Oklahoma and Washington, with Cal, Nebraska and Oregon showing serious interest.
He said this summer he definitely wants to take an unofficial visit to Oklahoma and would like to see Oregon and Washington, as well. As for his position going forward, Whiley said he only played offense in Las Vegas because he wanted to show his skills on that side of the ball, but it's a little less clear when it comes to the next level.
“Oklahoma and Arizona are mostly recruiting me for defense, but other schools say it's as an athlete,” Whiley said.
As a junior, Whiley caught 36 passes for 610 yards and 10 touchdowns and added 49 tackles and two interceptions.
