Future UW teammates take trip together

By Mason Kelley

Jermaine Kelly (Los Angeles/Salesian) wanted to make his last trip his best trip.

So the 6-foot-1, 171-pound cornerback decided to spend the weekend before signing day at Washington on an unofficial visit.

The three-star standout, who committed to the Huskies in January, will be joined by an impressive list of commits in Seattle this weekend.

“It’s going to be great,” Kelly said. “We’re all going to be up there together, chilling. We’re going to see what the future team is going to look like.”

Kelly has been joining linebacker Azeem Victor (Pomona, Calif./Pomona), receiver John Ross (Long Beach, Calif./Jordan) and Joe Mathis (Upland, Calif./Upland) for workouts.

Because of their developing friendships, they thought it would be fun to take a trip together.

“We’ve gotten really close,” Kelly said. “We try to catch up, do some sprints, work out every chance we get. We all wanted to save our money up and just go up there to Washington one more time.”

The quartet, which will be joined this weekend by offensive line commit Dane Crane (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita) and walk-on commit Ryan Turman (Bellevue, Wash./Interlake), often finds free fields in Southern California to train on together.

During these training sessions, the friends often talk about the future. When asked to describe those conversations and explain how they envision their college careers, Kelly needed just three words: “A national championship.”

This group is already setting lofty goals. They are looking forward to signing their letters of intent Feb. 6.

But, before they do that, they will try to add in a few more recruits to the Huskies’ 2013 recruiting class during their weekend trip to Seattle.
