The commits were joined by three friends from the South -- linebackerReuben Foster (Auburn, Ala./Auburn, defensive end Joe Sanders (Lagrange, Ga./Troup) and defensive tackle Maurice Swain (Lagrange, Ga./Troup) -- and, after meeting them, Van Winkle said, “I hope they come to the UW.”
Van Winkle’s host during the trip was offensive lineman Jake Eldrenkamp, a former league rival when he played at Bellevue (Wash.). One of the highlights for Van Winkle was meeting tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
“You see him on TV, you know he’s one of the best tight ends in the nation,” Van Winkle said. “It was great meeting him.”
When asked to sum up the visit, he raved about spending the weekend around future teammates at the school he will kick for next season.
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” he said. “It was unbelievable.”
