The offer list for cornerback Jalen Ortiz (Peoria, Ariz./Centennial) continues to grow, as the 5-foot-9, 167-pound athlete is now well into double digits. But he has narrowed his choices to a final six schools, as he focuses on Arizona State, Arkansas, Boise State, UCLA, Utah and Washington.
As a junior, the two-way standout rushed for 1,187 yards and 14 touchdowns, caught 14 passes for 340 yards and six touchdowns, registered 20 tackles, intercepted a pass and returned two kickoffs for touchdowns. Of his final six schools, Arkansas and UCLA see him contributing on offense, while the rest envision him as a cornerback. His ability on special teams is also a factor in his recruitment.
Thus far, Ortiz has taken unofficial visits to Arizona State, UCLA and Washington and has official visits scheduled to UCLA on Sept. 7, Arkansas on Sept. 14 and Washington on Oct. 12. He isn’t sure what he will do with the possibility of his final two visits, but he believes he will make a decision sometime in December.
As for the recruiting process, Ortiz said he has sailed through it smoothly.
“My dad has been a big help throughout the process,” he said. “It hasn’t been that difficult. I took as many unofficial visits as I could during the summer and have been building relationships with all the coaches.”
Though he is being recruited for different positions by different programs, Ortiz said that won’t be a factor in his decision.
“I don’t really care about that,” he said, adding that he doesn’t have a position preference. “I’ve been playing both ways my whole life.”
