RB Downs has 'mind-blowing' experience

10/14/2012

Devante Downs called the experience “mind-blowing.”

As the 6-foot-2, 240-pound running back (Mountlake Terrace, Wash./Mountlake Terrace) sat in the CenturyLink Field stands Saturday, he looked around at the other recruits watching Washington’s 24-14 loss to No. 11 USC.

It was a good feeling for the junior to survey the scene and know he was among his peers.

“It was pretty cool to see the guys you could potentially be playing with later in your life,” said Downs, who received a scholarship offer from the Huskies last week. “It was pretty mind-blowing to know that you have the opportunity to be playing for such a great program later in your life.”

Downs said he saw Washington defensive line commit Andrew Basham (Lynnwood, Wash./Lynnwood) and enjoyed catching up with his former youth football teammate.

While Washington lost, Downs said he remains excited about the program.

“It just shows there are a couple of missing pieces,” Downs said. “Maybe they need me and a couple of other recruits to move to the next level.”

The trip to the game gave Downs a chance to spend more time talking to running backs coach Joel Thomas and ace recruiter Tosh Lupoi. Downs said Lupoi told the 2014 prospect the Huskies could have used him in the red zone.

“It just means they’re excited, fired up about me and that makes me want to go there a little bit more,” Downs said.
