Keep an eye on: RB Chico McClatcher

9/20/2012

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- The first time sophomore Chico McClatcher (Federal Way, Wash./Federal Way) touched the ball, he returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown.

Then, later in the first quarter, McClatcher caught a swing pass. He broke a tackle in the backfield and sprinted 56 yards for a touchdown.

If that wasn’t enough, he added a 67-yard run that came up a yard short of another score.

He finished last week’s 62-28 victory over Graham (Wash.) Graham-Kapowsin with 244 all-purpose yards and was electric each time he touched the ball.

“He’s special,” Federal Way coach John Meagher said. “It’s just how fast he is from zero to 60. He’s elusive. He’s gotten stronger this year, so he’s not getting arm tackled and taken down to the ground. He’s just special.”

When asked which play stood out the most, he said, “I would say the punt return, because I just wanted to start out the game 7-0, get a quick one on them and build the momentum up for my team.”

While the 2015 prospect is on a path to become one of the state’s top recruits in his class, McClatcher has yet to start worrying about recruiting. Instead, he wants to help his team get better.

“It felt good, because both 2-0 teams were trying to compete,” said McClatcher when asked about the win. “We just knew we’re the better team. We came out and executed and put 62 on them.”

The 5-foot-7, 165-pound sophomore knows he can fill out his frame and is working to become a better back.

“Just keep working hard, hit the weight room,” McClatcher said. “I’ve just got to work on the strength, and I’ll be a complete player. I’m getting up there. I’ve just got to keep working hard every day, stay on top of my grades and everything will fall in place.”
