CONCORD, Calif. -- Michael Hutchings (Concord, Calif./De La Salle) knows January is going to be hectic.
The 6-foot-1, 213-pound outside linebacker has prepared himself for a barrage of late recruiting attention. He committed to USC in July but, when a prospect is rated No. 4 in the nation at his position, coaches hold out hope they might be able to sway his decision in the final weeks before signing day.
“It’s going to be crazy, but I can deal with it,” he said.

MILPITAS, Calif. -- Kelly King broke down a math problem on the white board at the front of the classroom. The football coach at Milpitas (Calif.) High School was preparing his students for a test when the door to his classroom opened.
In walked Vita Vea.
The 6-foot-4, 280-pound defensive end squeezed himself into a desk that was built for a much smaller student and waited patiently while King finished explaining an equation.

I took that as a good sign for the second day of my brief Northern California adventure.

Lavon Hooks' list of finalists has undergone another change.
The defensive tackle from Fulton (Miss.) Northeast Mississippi Community College added two schools to his list of finalists and eliminated Miami and Arizona State. Nebraska and Auburn are now back in the running to land the four-star prospect, ranked No. 15 in the ESPN Junior College 100.
"Nebraska, the coaching staff is great," the 6-foot-4, 295-pound prospect. "I know they have a good track record with putting guys in the league. It would be a great atmosphere. They've been sold out since I don't know when."

Top junior college defensive end Marcus Hardison (Dodge City Community College) left Manhattan, Kan., last week scratching his head at all that he now has to contemplate.
The 6-foot-4, 275-pound edge rusher, ranked No. 5 in the ESPN Junior College 100, took his official visit to Kansas State over the weekend and came away thoroughly impressed with the atmosphere. He especially reminisced about an hour-long conversation he had with Wildcats head coach Bill Snyder.
“His message to me was basically telling me how great the people are in Manhattan and asking me what my goals were,” Hardison said. “Then we talked a little football. He told me a lot about the school. We really didn’t touch on football but more about life in general. It was a real cool experience. He is real cool. I like him a lot.”

Myles Jack (Bellevue, Wash./Bellevue) thought he had his official visits set. He had a four-week schedule with trips to Arizona State, UCLA, Washington and Oregon.
He knew he had one more he could take, but most coaches wanted him to come in January. He didn’t have enough weeks to fit everything in.
Then Utah called. The Utes offered him a last-minute trip. It was a chance to experience something new, so the 6-foot-2, 230-pound linebacker accepted the invitation.

PALO ALTO, Calif. -- A few minutes after the school day ended Monday, Keller Chryst, Andrew Frick and Malcolm Davis walked into the office of Palo Alto coach Earl Hansen.
Before the trio of juniors could make it through the door, Hansen gave Chryst a hard time about what he was wearing.

MILPITAS, Calif. -- When I arrived at Milpitas High School on an overcast day, I wasn’t sure where to start my search for 2013 defensive end Vita Vea.
With a light drizzle blanketing the campus, I found shelter in the main office where I was the directed toward coach Kelly King’s classroom.
