Hailing from a school that has produced three U.S. Army All-Americans along the defensive line since the 2008 class, DE Connor Humphreys (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) is looking to make a name for himself as he follows in the path of former Rams' defensive linemen Myles Wade, Brennan Scarlett and current Duck Alex Balducci.

As one of the best players on what will presumably be among the top high school football teams in the country next season, ESPN Watch List LB Dwight Williams (Gardena, Calif./Serra) has received plenty of attention from college coaches in recent weeks. Last week, the 6-foot, 200-pound LB received two new scholarship offers from two tradition-rich programs.

The latest schools to be in touch with Williams both pulled the trigger and offered Williams a scholarhsip.

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- One of the most intriguing players in the country is undersized as a defensive tackle and oversized as a running back, yet has the ability to do both at a high level. This week, Elijah Qualls (Petaluma, Calif./Casa Grande) is playing the position that comes most naturally to him, defensive tackle.

After a standout performance at the first day of practice for the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, it's easy to see why UCLA and Nebraska continue to pursue the No. 212 player in the ESPN 300 despite his longtime commitment to Washington. The 6-foot-2, 265-pound Qualls is an interesting player because he can play all over the field.

Lavon Hooks' list of finalists has undergone another change.

The defensive tackle from Fulton (Miss.) Northeast Mississippi Community College added two schools to his list of finalists and eliminated Miami and Arizona State. Nebraska and Auburn are now back in the running to land the four-star prospect, ranked No. 15 in the ESPN Junior College 100.

"Nebraska, the coaching staff is great," the 6-foot-4, 295-pound prospect. "I know they have a good track record with putting guys in the league. It would be a great atmosphere. They've been sold out since I don't know when."

Northern California has produced some impressive linebackers over the years, and 2014 has another special product in outside linebacker D.J. Calhoun (El Cerrito, Calif./El Cerrito).

The ESPN Watch List standout held early offers from Utah and Washington before adding a big one from one of his favorite programs. On a recent visit to UCLA, Calhoun was talking with Bruins' wide receiver Kenny Walker when linebackers coach Jeff Ulbrich pulled him aside and told the junior linebacker that he had an offer from UCLA.

"I was excited," Calhoun said. "I like UCLA a lot. The players are really cool and the coaches are cool, especially the linebackers coach. I've always kind of liked them, but recently I really started looking into them and seeing how they play."

Max Redfield, Leon McQuayTom Hauck for ESPN.comMax Redfield is out at USC -- is Leon McQuay in?
Think USC was left reeling after Max Redfield (left) decommitted this week? Not really. The Trojans appear to be zeroing in on Leon McQuay III (right). And then there's the nation’s No. 1 recruit, Robert Nkemdiche, who decommitted Thursday. It's an open market in this week’s #BlueChipBattles Insider.

You can also rank the battles this week in SportsNation.

RecruitingNation has summoned its writers from around the country to compile a list of the top 10 battles for elite football recruits Insider leading up to February's signing day. We'll update our rankings periodically to reflect a change in a player's status (i.e., new offers, trimmed-down list or a positive/negative official visit).

Our writers have debated the list for weeks, but we value your input as well. Voice your opinion on Twitter (@RecruitingESPN) using#BlueChipBattles or vote for which player should hold the No. 1 spot on Facebook.

After rushing for more than 350 yards and eight touchdowns last Friday, running back Terrell Newby (West Hills, Calif./Chaminade) received plenty of attention from the schools recruiting him.

"Pretty much every school recruiting me hit me on Facebook," Newby said. "They all said what a great performance I had and they can't wait to get me on campus."

The Experts discuss the top matchups from Week 2 of the college football season. Travis Haney talks Georgia-Missouri, Mike Bellotti discusses Florida-Texas A&M, Matt Stinchcomb breaks down Penn State-Virginia, Charles Arbuckle has UCLA-Nebraska and the group also assesses LSU-Washington.
The Nebraska Cornhuskers put plenty of energy into recruiting California in a big way, and that effort seems to be paying off with four-star running back Terrell Newby (West Hills, Calif./Chaminade).

Newby has a top four of California, Nebraska, Oregon and Washington, but the Cornhuskers will get the first opportunity to make a positive impression as Newby has an official visit to Nebraska scheduled for Sept. 21. He said he is very much looking forward to the official visit, though he has already seen much of what Nebraska has to offer, as he visited unofficially this past summer.

Newby added that he is in the process of setting up official visits to California and Oregon as well. He would like to see the Golden Bears take on Stanford, but no dates have been scheduled yet for either trip.

The 5-foot-9, 185-pound tailback led his Eagles to a victory over Little Rock (Ark.) Pulaski Academy on Friday, as he rushed for 175 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

UPLAND, Calif. -- Defensive end Joe Mathis (Upland, Calif./Upland) didn’t shy away from competition this offseason, even though he might have had a reason to. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound lineman said he fractured a bone in his foot back in April, but pushed through the injury this summer and took part in several camps.

“Eventually, I had to stay off of it for three weeks, ice it and all that,” Mathis said. “It was pretty painful to play with that. I played on it and made it worse, but I’m back now.”

Mathis is back in several ways. After getting up to 270 pounds, Mathis put in some serious work this summer.

Offensive lineman Viane Talamaivao (Corona, Calif./Centennial) is regarded as one of the top offensive linemen in the West for the 2014 recruiting class. It’s doubly impressive, perhaps, when you consider the 6-foot-2, 299-pound guard wasn’t even sure he belonged at a Nike Football Training Camp this past spring.

But not only did Talamaivao prove he belonged, he walked away with the offensive line MVP award, and has seen his recruitment take off since then.

UCLA offered him a scholarship shortly after the camp. Washington has been in regular contact and Talamaivao said the Huskies coaches have spoken about a potential offer in the future. Arizona, Colorado and Nebraska are recruiting the big linemen, who said he is also starting to hear from several East Coast schools, including Wake Forest.

This year might not offer the same depth of top-tier West region offensive linemen that the 2012 class produced, but there is no lack of overall ability. Headlining the list of uncommitted West Coast offensive linemen is Scott Quessenberry (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon).

The nation’s No. 2 center and No. 189 recruit overall, Quessenberry has offers from programs across the country. But the 6-foot-4, 276-pound lineman said that with written offers now coming in, he hopes to begin narrowing his list of potential destinations.

“With all of these verbal offers, anything can happen,” he said. “But once you have the written offer, it’s the real deal.”
