SAN ANTONIO -- ESPN 150 outside linebacker Mike Mitchell (Plano, Texas/Prestonwood Christian) isn’t big on speaking publicly. He’d rather let his game do the talking -- and it speaks volumes.

On Monday, the 6-foot-5, 222-pound linebacker officially confirmed that he will announce his college plans during Saturday’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Oregon, Texas A&M and Ohio State are his three finalists.

Defensive backs remain top priority

USC has reeled in five verbal commitments in the month of July, filling a third of its current recruiting class in the span of 16 frantic days. The latest came Monday when Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy's Jalen Ramsey, the nation's seventh-ranked cornerback, pledged for the Trojans.

Dwindling scholarship numbers obviously won't allow the Trojans to keep the same torrid pace, and neither will the uncertain status of their top remaining targets. The recruits atop USC's board don't appear to be in any hurry to commit.

With Ramsey, cornerback Chris Hawkins (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) and top-ranked safety Su'a Cravens (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) on board, the attention turns to adding to an already strong secondary group.

Eddie VanderdoesTom Hauck/ESPNHSAuburn, Calif., defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes seems to have Oregon as his leader, but would NCAA sanctions against the Ducks provide an opening for the Trojans?

Ed (Las Cruces, N.M.): I know this is not a recruiting question, but was wondering if there were any rumors when NCAA would release findings/sanctions on Oregon? Is there any historical correlation between length of time they take and severity of sanctions? If they do come out this year, do you think it could be the tipping point for Vanderdoes? Thanks.

As USC fans well know, there is no set timetable for the NCAA on when they release any findings or any correlation to the length of the investigation and the penalties handed down. The NCAA is very random in this regard and it’s hard to predict how they will respond. With that being said, we are hearing rumblings that something is expected soon and that it will be a serious punishment. Without knowing what that punishment might be it’s hard to know how it would impact Eddie Vanderdoes. Right now Vanderdoes certainly seems to have the Ducks as his team to beat.

Brady (Reading, Pa.): With Su'a Cravens' commitment and our chances looking good for getting either Max Redfield, Priest Willis, or Tahaan Goodman for the other safety spot, what do you think is a bigger need, CB Vernon Hargreaves or Mackensie Alexander, or DL recruits like Eddie Vanderdoes, Robert Nkemdiche, Joe Mathis or Montravius Adams?
