With USC’s recruitment of cornerback Jalen Ramsey crumbling apart on national signing day and a failed last-minute attempt at flipping local standout Jermaine Kelly, the Trojans limped across the finish line in the 2013 recruiting cycle.

WeAreSC signing day blog

PM PT
5:15 p.m. -- Former USC commit Eddie Vanderdoes signed with Notre Dame.

4:11 p.m. -- USC sent out a press release announcing its recruiting class. "We could only sign a limited number of players because of our sanctions, so we went after the best of the best," coach Lane Kiffin said in a statement.

Kiffin will hold a press conference on campus at 5 p.m. PT. It will be streamed live official athletic website, usctrojans.com.

4:00 p.m. -- "In the summertime I committed to USC, and there's a reason why I committed," said Nico Falah, who announced for the Trojans. "It was back and forth and hard to decide, but I went with the greater picture."

Falah also said that UCLA made a late run for him this morning, but he prayed about the decision and signed with USC.

1:08 p.m. -- Indications are that USC might be done for the day. There's the possibility that the coaching staff tucks away the five available scholarships and uses them for the 2014 class, which would become a 20-member class.

12:46 p.m. -- USC has officially announced the signings of Nico Falah, Steven Mitchell, Ty Isaac, Michael Hutchings, Khaliel Rodgers and Quinton Powell.

12:34 p.m. -- ESPN 150 prospect Steven Mitchell, the only receiver in the class, has also signed. No official word from USC yet, though. No surprise on this one. Read all about Mitchell's drama-free recruitment here Insider.

12:29 p.m. -- It's important to note that USC has yet to announce any of its signees, though Khaliel Rodgers and Michael Hutchings have confirmed they have signed and sent in their national letters of intent.

12:16 p.m. -- Washington has announced that it received a signed national letter of intent from cornerback Jermaine Kelly, ending any chance USC had to swoop in late for the local standout. The Trojans offered on Tuesday hoping to soften the blow dealt by the loss of Jalen Ramsey, but it was too late. Kelly fell in love with Seattle and decided to leave the area. USC has had a bad two days.

12:11 p.m. -- It's no surprise now, but Jason Hatcher has officially signed with Kentucky. He walked into his announcement ceremony wearing a blue tie and carrying a blue Kentucky hat. Bigelow is the lone defensive lineman who remains from a group that included Hatcher, Fitts, Prevot and Eddie Vanderdoes.

11:11 a.m. -- We've received word that cornerback Jermaine Kelly, who was offered by USC less than 24 hours before signing day, is expected to announce his college choice in 30 minutes.

Kelly (Los Angeles/Salesian) is committed to Washington and was previously committed to UCLA, but it wouldn't be surprising if he signed with childhood favorite USC. It would be big for the Trojans given the loss of No. 4 CB Jalen Ramsey to Florida State.

11:00 a.m. -- No. 14 DT Keith Bryant had a USC hat on the table at his announcement ceremony but committed to Florida State. It appears Bigelow will be the only incoming defensive lineman for the Trojans.

9:33 a.m. -- Eddie Vanderdoes has cleared the air about his situation, writing on his Twitter account: "I'll put my life on it that I have NOT signed one paper yet."

9:15 a.m. -- ESPN 150 linebacker Quinton Powell (Daytona Beach, Fla./Mainland) committed to USC, ending a drought of sorts for the Trojans. Fitts, Thomas, Ramsey and Prevot had committed elsewhere, so this is an important pick up for USC.

"Every time I heard about (the decommitments) I shrugged it off," Powell said. "I just thought about myself. I wanted to commit based on my opinion of the school."

8:41 a.m. -- Prevot announced he is signing with Oregon. Another blow to USC, heightened by the fact that they lost out to another Pac-12 school... With DE Kylie Fitts (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley) signing with UCLA and Jason Hatcher (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) expected to sign with Kentucky, the Trojans are down to early enrollee Kenny Bigelow in this class.

8:28 a.m. -- Four-star DE Torrodney Prevot (Houston, Texas/Alief Taylor) has three hats on the table at his announcement ceremony: USC, Oregon and Texas A&M...

8:00 a.m. -- No. 4-rated CB Jalen Ramsey (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) officially flipped from USC to Florida State in a signing ceremony at his school. It's a big loss for USC, which had held onto his commitment since the summer. Ultimately, the firing of defensive backs coach Marvin Sanders appears to have made the difference. Ramsey felt very comfortable with new Florida State defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, who recruited him while he was at Alabama.

7:16 a.m. -- UCLA coach Jim Mora announced the school received a signed national letter of intent from four-star safety Tahaan Goodman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga), ending any speculation that the close friend of USC early enrollee Chris Hawkins might potentially flip. Not catastrophic since the Trojans are set at safety with No. 1 Su'a Cravens and No. 3 Leon McQuay III.

6:15 a.m. -- No. 1-rated OLB Matthew Thomas (Miami, Fla./Booker T. Washington) committed to Florida State, citing a comfort level with the coaches and it being a family decision. According to sources, USC made a late run Tuesday night but ran out of time.

4:55 a.m. -- ESPN 300 OG Khaliel Rodgers has signed his paperwork and is making it official with the Trojans.

4:15 a.m. -- Signing day is finally here. Follow along for the latest news as USC looks to put the finishing touches on its 2013 recruiting class.

USC offers juco CB Steven Nelson

USC offered a scholarship to junior college cornerback and recent Georgia decommit Steven Nelson (Warner Robins, Ga./College of the Sequoias), College of the Sequoias coach Robert Dougherty said Monday.

The USC coaching staff requested Nelson's academic transcripts and extended the offer Monday, an indication that the Trojans are preparing backup options in case a decommitment occurs down the road. USC has commitments from two four-star cornerbacks in the current class: No. 7-rated Jalen Ramsey (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) and No. 11-rated Chris Hawkins (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga). Hawkins plans to enroll in January and Ramsey has official visits scheduled to Washington (Dec. 7) and Alabama (Jan. 11). Ramsey will take his trip to Los Angeles for the weekend of Jan. 18.

The 6-foot, 185-pound Nelson decommitted from Georgia last week. College of the Sequoias (Visalia, Calif.) defensive backs coach Fred Zepeda told ESPN's DawgNation that Nelson expressed serious interest in Oregon State since taking an official visit to Corvallis on Oct. 6.

Salesian group draws attention

Jihad VercherTom Hauck/ESPNHSSenior quarterback Jihad Vercher is one of a handful of elite Division I prospects on Los Angeles Salesian.
LOS ANGELES -- Powerful and promising: The two perfect adjectives to describe the a collection of talent at Los Angeles Salesian.

The headliners now are Class of 2013 cornerback Jermaine Kelly, a UCLA commit, and dual-threat quarterback Jihad Vercher, whose stock has been rising in recent weeks. Kelly had three total touchdowns and Vercher had four Friday night in an easy 74-7 victory against an overmatched San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) Capistrano Valley Christian team.

The next wave for Salesian, though, might be even more impressive. A pair of coveted Class of 2014 recruits, linebacker Jamardre Cobb and defensive end Marquis Ware, each had touchdown runs Friday on top of their stellar defensive play. Class of 2014 cornerback Rodney Carr had an interception and 159 rushing yards.

Los Angeles Salesian was seemingly a mandatory stop for college coaches during the spring evaluation period and with the Mustangs making a strong push out of the gates this fall, coaches will continue to visit Salesian’s standouts.

The biggest news came last week, when quarterback Jihad Vercher picked up his first offer, from Army. Vercher was tremendous this spring and summer, as he stood out at every camp he attended. He threw for 331 yards and rushed for 165 yards and four touchdowns in a tough Week 2 loss, but bounced back in blowout wins the past two weeks, as he completed 22 of 29 passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns in the two wins.

Vercher said he understands that an offer from a service academy carries a different meaning than one from any other FBS program, but he added that he views that offer as a distinct possibility. Boise State and Oregon State coaches have been by the Salesian campus in recent weeks and Vercher said he has heard from additional programs as well, but the senior quarterback added that he is content to play out his season and wait for coaches to make a decision.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- The B2G Elite Camp, held over the weekend at Cal Lutheran University featured 100 top football players from across the country. The published roster was loaded with talent and the turn out did not disappoint. After two days of individual drills, including one-on-one and seven-on-seven work, the group broke into the "A game" on Sunday, which featured several highlights.

In a high-scoring affair that was eventually secured for the offense with a leaping touchdown grab from wide receiver Laquon Treadwell (Crete, Ill./Crete-Monee), both sides had players step up and contribute.

But it began and ended with Treadwell, who hauled in three touchdown passes and was awarded the offensive MVP of camp. The nation's No. 38 player and No. 4 wide receiver had two long catch-and-run touchdowns, then made his mark on the final drive with a tough catch in traffic along the sideline to set up the final score. The few times he had difficulty getting open or securing a catch, more times than note it was cornerback Chris Hawkins (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) providing the coverage. The two had several terrific one-on-one battles throughout camp with neither player giving an inch to the other. Hawkins said Treadwell can expect to hear from him in the future, as the USC commit looks to haul in another standout receiver for the Trojans while they participate in The Opening later this week.

The 2012 B2G Elite Camp will kick off on June 29 and the roster of attendees makes it a must-see event for any recruiting fan.

Held at Cal Lutheran University, the camp features three days of training, meetings and film study for 85 top athletes. Camp attendees are also given a glimpse into the academic requirements at the next level.

B2G has produced plenty of big time defensive backs over the years, and that pedigree combined with how loaded the 2013 West region recruiting class is with safeties and cornerbacks makes it no surprise that the roster is stacked at those two positions.

USC skills camp recap

June, 11, 2012
6/11/12
12:53
PM PT
It was a flurry of activity on Sunday at the USC skills camp with a verbal commit, several new offers and a look at some top underclassmen.

Things were particularly strong at the wide receiver position. Two players came into the camp with USC offers -- Darrell Daniels (Freedom, Calif./Oakley) and Demorea Stringfellow (Moreno Valley, Calif./Rancho Verde) -- while two other receiver offers were made to Steven Mitchell (Mission Hills, Calif./Alemany) and Sebastian Larue (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica). The Trojans also offered Tyree Robinson from San Diego Lincoln, an athlete who could end up at receiver.

With the commitment of Mitchell -- to go along with an earlier verbal from Eldridge Massington from Mesquite (Texas) West Mesquite -- the Trojans now have two commitments at the wide receiver spot, and most recruiting projections had the Trojans taking two receivers in this class. The USC coaches confirmed with Larue that his offer was on the table -- even after the Mitchell verbal -- so that could be an indication that the Trojans might not be done at that position.

It's going to be a busy weekend out West, as events are scheduled up and down the coast.

Oregon will play host to the Nike Football Sparq Combine on Saturday and Nike Football Training Camp on Sunday. Several top prospects will be in attendance on Sunday, and the linemen battles should be of particular interest. Defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes (Auburn, Calif./Placer), the No. 57 prospect in the ESPN 150, will have an opportunity to go up against Oregon offensive tackle commit Evan Voeller (West Linn, Ore./West Linn), the top offensive lineman in the West. Vanderdoes could also be challenged by center Scott Quessenberry (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon). Oregon has offered both Vanderdoes and Quessenberry, and Voeller will likely do some recruiting of his own during the camp.

But Oregon won't be the only school hosting an event this weekend. In what is likely far from a coincidence, USC and UCLA have the same camps scheduled this weekend -- linemen on Saturday and skill-position players on Sunday. One of the names to keep an eye on there is offensive tackle Cameron Hunt (Corona, Calif./Centennial). Hunt has hauled in more than a dozen scholarship offers, but has yet to receive one from either of the local schools. He'll attend both camps on Saturday in the hopes of earning one in person. Hunt has had a very strong spring, earning an invitation to The Opening along the way.
