Pac-12 bowl projections: Week 14

First off, the Rose Bowl projection of Stanford is more about consistency, not about a prediction of the Pac-12 title game, which Kevin Gemmell and I will pick on Thursday.

I suspect that either Kevin or myself will tap Arizona State to win the conference championship in Sun Devil Stadium on Saturday. It's notable ASU is the favorite.

Oregon's national brand will make it more intriguing over the loser of the Pac-12 title game for the Valero Alamo Bowl.

Then the intrigue is about Arizona, Washington State and Oregon State.

Among those three, the Beavers rate third, and we feel they are the most likely to be left out -- due to a five-game losing streak to end the season.

I feel strongly that Arizona and Washington State will go bowling somewhere, starting with the fact that both athletic directors -- Greg Byrne at Arizona and Bill Moos at Washington State -- are big-time salesmen.

Pac-12 bowl projections: Week 13

Another week, another shakeup. And the Pac-12 now has nine bowl-eligible teams -- welcome Washington State.

We continue to believe all nine will get bowl berths, even with two more teams than the Pac-12 has bowl contracts.

Some of you have noticed inconsistency with these Sunday evening projections and then Kevin's and my predictions on Thursday. It's pretty simple. Our thinking of the impending week's matchups often changes by Thursday when we do predictions. We also might find out that, say, Utah has lost its starting QB for the season, so we both pick the Cougars to beat the Utes, even though we didn't project the Cougs to earn bowl eligibility the previous Sunday.

So obviously, predictions are part of this. And those might change during the week. We certainly feel more informed on Thursday than today.

We have Stanford beating Arizona State in the Pac-12 championship game, though we are given a long pause by the fact that Arizona State will host the Pac-12 title game if it beats Arizona on Saturday.

We then have the Valero Alamo Bowl going with the Oregon brand over the Sun Devils.

Next, we project a UCLA win over USC, but I'm not sure that will change the bowl pecking order. The Hyundai Sun Bowl probably doesn't want a repeat visit from USC, though the Ed Orgeron story -- with a victory over the Bruins -- might be hard to resist.

That's also our thinking for Washington State going to the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Arizona went there last season, and the Cougars beat the Wildcats. And the Cougs will be enthusiastic about getting invited, much more so than other Pac-12 possibilities.

As for the Wildcats and Oregon State, they both obviously could increase their stock by winning rivalry games this weekend. The Wildcats seem almost certain to get, at least, an at-large berth because RB Ka'Deem Carey is certain to be a two-time first-team All-American.

Pac-12 bowl projections: Week 12

The Pac-12, as previously noted, has eight bowl-eligible teams with only seven contracted bowls. Further, Stanford's loss to USC on Saturday makes it far less likely the conference will get two BCS bowl teams (ADs across the league just redlined a half-million from their revenues), which means one fewer spot than we've projected all season.

Further, Washington State's win at Arizona gives the Cougars' bowl hopes a significant boost. If they can beat either Utah on Saturday or Washington in the season finale, the Cougs will go bowling for the first time since 2003.

Meanwhile, the Utes and Colorado need to win out in order to become bowl eligible. They play on Nov. 30, the final game of the regular season.

Washington and USC gave the Pac-12 eight bowl-eligible teams with only seven contracted bowls.

We're still projecting the Pac-12 to get two BCS bowl teams, despite Stanford knocking Oregon out of the national title game. We're also projecting nine conference teams to become bowl eligible, which means the conference will have a free agent. To be honest, we have no idea where that free agent -- we're projecting Utah -- might end up.

There, in fact, might not be an available spot. There are 35 bowls with 70 spots to fill. At present, there are 57 bowl-eligible teams with 20 needing just one more win.

Oregon State's loss to USC complicated things this week.

Of course, Oregon's visit to Stanford will test these projections. Arizona can make a move with a win on Saturday against visiting UCLA. Washington's upcoming back-to-back road games at UCLA and Oregon State will be critical in the bowl pecking order.

After last year's debacle, would the Sun Bowl want USC again?

Nothing changes this week as most of the weekend's results went as expected.

Three Pac-12 teams already are bowl eligible and four others need just one more win. USC, Utah and Washington State need two more wins.

There will be a much higher degree of earnestness to these projections now that the season is getting down to brass tacks.

Of course, there's plenty of work ahead. Beyond the obvious big games -- say Oregon-UCLA, Oregon-Stanford and UCLA-Arizona State -- the Washington-Oregon State and USC-Utah games loom large.

Some teams are becoming more clear. Some more difficult to measure, most notably Washington.

Obviously, Washington State was dumped this week. As of now, we project the Cougars finishing 5-7. It also wouldn't shock me if they won three of their final four games. The Apple Cup, in fact, might turn out to be very, very important for both programs.

The most important thing to remember about these bowl projections? It's Week 3, and it's silly that we do bowl projections in Week 3.

But we do have a new Pac-12 leader. And UCLA moves up in the South.

The Pac-12 blog might be going off the rails here, but the weekend results suggested that the pool of potential bowl teams perhaps should widen. So we have projected 10 bowl-eligible Pac-12 teams, which means we've included two teams getting selected for at-large berths in bowls that are not contracted to the conference.

Of course, many teams with early optimism should keep in mind the schedule ahead. I know Utah fans are happy with a 2-0 start, but they should look at the schedule and see if they are confident four more wins lie ahead. It certainly won't be easy, as the toughest part is yet to come.

Further, as bad as USC looked against Washington State, the Trojans can't possibly be headed for a losing season ... can they? And what about Oregon State: Was the Eastern Washington game merely just one of those college football oddities? And can Washington State keep winning?

Lots of questions.

Does the math here pencil out? Probably not. But it makes as much as sense as doing bowl projections in week two.

We still like Stanford atop the conference. But the Ducks sure did look good at Virginia.

The first weekend of the season is over. That means we should start projecting bowl games. Or that means my bosses told me to do that.
