Q&A: ESPN 150 DT McDowell talks visits

By Bob Przybylo

The accolades are growing by the day for defensive tackle Garrald McDowell (Covington, La./Covington).

Becoming an Under Armour All-American, being invited to The Opening and getting ranked No. 105 in the ESPN 150 is not a bad way to start a spring.

Oklahoma has taken notice as the Sooners are the latest of many top schools to enter the race to land McDowell, who is 6-foot-3 and 257 pounds. With offers from Alabama and Florida and USC, among several others, it’s going to be a busy few months coming up for McDowell.

Garrald McDowell, ranked at No. 9 at defensive tackle said he wants to visit OU, Miami (Fla.), Alabama, Ole Miss and USC this summer.
SoonerNation: You definitely have a lot of options, so what’s the latest right now with your recruitment?

Garrald McDowell: All of my options are open right now. I was just talking to my coaches about a plan of what we’re going to do. I’m going to try to make most of my visits in the summer and then decide after my senior season. I don’t want to be distracted.

SN: Summer is always a big time for camp season. Are there any camps you know you’re definitely going to attend?

McDowell: The only two I know for sure are Alabama and Ole Miss. It doesn’t matter what conference they’re in, but there is a lot to like about the SEC.

SN: One school trying to lure you away from the SEC is Oklahoma. The Sooners recently offered. How did that come about?

McDowell: I have no idea. I hadn’t received any letters from OU the entire time, but I guess they saw my tape and liked it. I was surprised to get the offer.

SN: Does that hurt them moving forward that they never showed any interest before?

McDowell: No, not at all. I’m starting to talk with Coach [Jerry] Montgomery every now and then and building that relationship.

SN: Would OU be a school you would consider visiting?

McDowell: Yes, they would. I don’t have any favorites, but I would like to visit OU, Miami (Fla.), Alabama, Ole Miss and USC.

SN: In your opinion, what are your biggest strengths as a player?

McDowell: I use my hands a lot better than a lot of defensive tackles. I have good technique, and I feel like I can get off the ball faster than other tackles.

SN: When you’re looking at schools, what are some of the biggest factors going into your decision?

McDowell: The coaching staff. I want to play for a great staff that I can trust. The depth chart is very important because I don’t want to sit on the bench. And academics. I want to major in business, so the school has to have a good business program.
