CB Pickett lands a big in-state offer
By Erik McKinney
Cornerback Adarius Pickett (El Cerrito, Calif./El Cerrito) is in no hurry to come up with a final decision in his recruitment, but the process for the 6-foot, 185-pound athlete got slightly more interesting on Wednesday when his high school coach told him to pick up the phone.
"My coach told me to call him and said that USC wants to talk," Pickett said. "I called them and it was Coach [Clay] Helton, [Clancy] Pendergast and [Lane] Kiffin. They told me they had just come out of a defensive backs meeting and they like me a lot. They like the way I play, that I'm really aggressive and they said I could come in early and help them out. They said I have an offer from them."
Pickett said the offer caught him off guard, as he thought the conversation would simply be his weekly check in with Helton. But this news was a very welcome way to start Wednesday morning during his spring break.
"I wasn't expecting them to offer right now. This is a big offer," Pickett said. "USC is a great school. I'm really happy with this."
Pickett adds the offer from the Trojans to early offers from Arizona State, California, Nevada, UCLA, Utah and Washington State.
"This makes me feel blessed," he said. "I'm really happy with the situation I'm in right now. It makes me want to keep working harder."
With the offer, the Trojans don't just put themselves in position to land the ESPN Watch List cornerback. Pickett is good friends with teammate D.J. Calhoun as well as standout running back Joe Mixon (Oakley, Calif./Freedom). Now, all three hold USC offers, but Pickett said an early decision still isn't likely to come.
"I'm still going to have to talk things out with my family," he said. "We'll see how it goes."
