Watch List DE McDowell picks up new offer
By Josh Moyer
Class of 2014 DE prospect Malik McDowell is attracting more and more attention nationwide.
Penn State assistant Larry Johnson usually doesn't usually travel to Michigan high schools to offer juniors. But then again, he doesn't often come across defensive ends like the recruit he saw Thursday either.
Malik McDowell (Detroit, Mich./Loyola) added yet another scholarship to his growing offer sheet, this time from Penn State -- and Loyola coach John Callahan wasn't surprised much. USC stopped by Friday to check in on the Watch List prospect, and schools such as Michigan, Notre Dame and Ohio State already have extended offers.
"The fact of the matter is coaches know kids like him just don't come around often," Callahan said. "He's 6-8, 285 pounds, and he looks 220. So he's thin -- if I can say that -- a thin 285. He has incredible reach, and he a ran a legit 4.8 in the 40s this past summer, and he's probably a step quicker even now."
According to Callahan, his prized player is very early in his recruitment and is remaining open to every school at this point. McDowell isn't expected to commit anytime soon.
"You know, he doesn't have a clue," Callahan said. "I'd say he's no closer today than he was at the end of the football season. ... He's not even weighing his options yet, to be honest with you."
McDowell helped his Loyola team to a 13-1 record this past season and wreaked havoc on opposing offenses. He finished with 70 tackles, 15 sacks and 19 tackles-for-loss.
And, his coach added, he's just 16 years old right now.
"Where's he going to be when he's 19?" Callahan asked. "He's just going to be a beast."
