WeAreSC recruiting mailbag

By Blair Angulo

WeAreSC recruiting reporter Blair Angulo answers reader questions in his mailbag every week. Have a USC recruiting question of your own? Submit it here.

mattav12: Do you think (Eddie) Vanderdoes and (Ty) Isaac end up at SC?

Isaac (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic Academy) has publicly backed his USC commitment from the start, remaining firm despite being pursued by competing Midwest schools. Isaac would form a promising running back tandem with Justin Davis, who is already enrolled and on campus. It would be a surprise if Isaac didn’t join him in Los Angeles this summer.

Vanderdoes is a different story. After stating that USC would receive his final official visit, the five-star defensive tackle scheduled a trip to Notre Dame for the Jan. 25 weekend. The Trojans still have a good chance here, but this recruiting battle is a whole lot wider than it used to be.

Georgetirebiter GTB: I think USC is still in the lead for Vanderdoes. 50-50???

Vanderdoes will officially visit USC on Jan. 18 and has UCLA, Washington, Alabama and Notre Dame in his top five. I’m with you, GTB. I think USC is still the school to beat here given Ed Orgeron’s closing abilities and the fact that Vanderdoes will be joined on campus by recruits he built relationships with while he was committed.

@kingrmo via Twitter: If SC can't fill their remaining spots or if a disaster like (Jalen) Ramsey to FSU happens, are there plans in place for other recruits?

There are always backup plans. These coaches are too seasoned not to have alternate options lined up. But with that being said, it would be an all-time eyebrow-raiser if Ramsey didn’t sign with USC. One name to keep track of is Jermaine Kelly of Los Angeles Salesian. Kelly, a former UCLA commit who recently flipped to Washington, has drawn a couple of visits from the Trojans coaching staff. If things turn completely sour, don’t be surprised to see a guy like Keishawn Bierria from two-time CIF Los Angeles City Section champion Harbor City Narbonne get a close look.

Yvan Flores (via @yvanrc51): Great for Vanderdoes [to get a fifth star in new rankings], but how does Su’a Cravens still have a four-star rating?

Cravens narrowly missed the fifth star in the final ESPN 150 rankings. If it’s any consolation, Cravens, who is already on the USC campus, was by far the best player I saw all season. He was the top-ranked player in the state.

Dee Hunter (via @I_Am_Nice05): Kylie Fitts decommitting... Who do they now go after? Kinda shocked at this one but then again I shouldn't be...

It was truly a revelation for anyone that monitored Fitts’ recruitment. The four-star defensive end committed in April and was perhaps the biggest Trojans fan among all the recruits I covered this year. Initially, I don’t think USC’s plan changes. Orgeron will still go after Fitts and I wouldn’t anticipate his spot in the class to be filled unless Fitts makes the first move.
