Max Browne's goal: Get Vanderdoes

By Damon Sayles

SAN ANTONIO -- As a high-profile quarterback, Max Browne's every word is gold. So when Browne (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline) said USC needs to focus on one player in particular, many listened and agreed.

Brown, an ESPN 150 quarterback and the nation’s No. 2 quarterback (No. 18 player overall), said regaining ESPN 150 defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes (Auburn, Calif./Placer) is a priority for the Trojans’ recruiting class, and he’s doing what he can to make sure the No. 33 player in the country and recent USC decommit signs his letter of intent with the Trojans in February.

Browne and Vanderdoes were teammates at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl over the weekend. Browne wants the two to wear USC apparel next year.

“Eddie, man ... we’re hoping we can get him,” Browne said. “I know it’s in the back of my mind trying to get him back. I’ve seen firsthand how good he is, and he’s a player we need. He’s a good guy, and he decommitted for the right reasons. He knows the deal.”

Vanderdoes decommitted from USC to explore other options, but the Trojans are still one of his favorites. The nation’s No. 4 defensive tackle also has UCLA, Washington, Notre Dame and Alabama on his list. He has taken visits to UCLA and Washington and is scheduled to visit Notre Dame this weekend and USC the following week.

“I think more so, a lot of the guys are realizing, ‘I’ve got to make a big decision in less than a month,’ ” Browne said, referring to Vanderdoes. “For some of us, USC is what we want. For some, they’re just making sure this is something they want.”

Browne already has signed his financial aid papers with USC. He will make everything official by signing a national letter of intent next month.
