USC commit discusses upcoming UW visit

By Damon Sayles

SAN ANTONIO -- It’s rare not to find USC commit and ESPN 150 outside linebacker Michael Hutchings (Concord, Calif./De La Salle) alongside another Trojans commit at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. After all, there are 13 USC-bound athletes in San Antonio, and a couple of uncommitted players are considering the Trojans.

“We’ve spent most of our time together at the hotel -- all 13 of us,” Hutchings said. “Wherever we go, we look like a big clan. We’re going to be with each other for 3-4 years at least.”

While Hutchings has said on several occasions that he’s solid with his pledge, there’s something about Washington that continues to catch his attention. The 6-foot-2, 213-pound linebacker -- the No. 4 outside linebacker in the country -- said he has a visit to Washington set up for Jan. 11, and he's looking to get some questions answered.

“I just want to get some reassurance and make sure I’m making the right decision,” Hutchings said. “Washington was always my second contender. I want to make sure nothing’s changed with them and see if I get a good feel from them.”

Hutchings committed to USC in July and has built a great relationship with his recruiting contact, quarterbacks coach Clay Helton. However, Hutchings also has been in contact with Washington’s recruiting tandem of defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi and linebackers coach Peter Sirmon, two hot names that have resonated among players, particularly at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Hutchings said he doesn’t expect any changes in his commitment, but he didn’t want to go to USC with unanswered questions about Washington.

“I’m fully committed to SC,” he said, “but I want to make sure that’s where I want to go. I’ll do that by taking this visit to Washington.”
