Ramsey adds to USC gold rush

By Blair Angulo

The rich got richer Monday, and it seems that only NCAA mandated scholarship limitations will put a cap on USC’s gold rush.

Four-star cornerback Jalen Ramsey (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) became the latest high-profile recruit to commit to the Trojans, joining a stacked class that already includes 11 players ranked in the ESPN 150. Three of the other four verbal commitments are ranked inside the ESPN 300.

Ramsey, the nation’s seventh-ranked corner and 57th-best prospect overall, had recently taken two trips to the USC campus. He shined at the Rising Stars Camp and followed it up with a stellar showing at The Opening, leading to his enormous ascension in the rankings.

On Monday, the top-ranked player in Tennessee pulled out a white USC cap from under the podium and put an end to his recruitment.

"Coach [Marvin] Sanders kept telling me I was the No. 1 corner on his board. That meant a lot to me," Ramsey said during his announcement ceremony.

That Ramsey committed so soon after twice visiting Los Angeles indicates he had seen enough. The Trojans, in dire need for defensive backs, wowed him with a possibility of joining a star-studded class.

The 6-foot, 190-pound Ramsey gives the Trojans their 15th commitment overall and second cornerback to pair with four-star Chris Hawkins of Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.). And USC isn't quite done building its future secondary.

Assuming three verbal commitments enroll early, it would leave only three available spots in the 2013 recruiting class. If the USC coaching staff continues its current trend, two of the remaining spots would come from a talented group of defensive backs that includes Vernon Hargreaves III (Tampa, Fla./Wharton), Max Redfield (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo), Priest Willis (Tempe, Ariz./Marcos de Niza), Leon McQuay III (Seffner, Fla./Armwood) and Tahaan Goodman (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga).

The quantity might not be there for this Trojans class, but the quality sure is.(
