Florida athlete picks up USC offer
By Blair Angulo
USC has reached into the Sunshine State in recent years to land the likes of Leonard Williams, Nelson Agholor and Quinton Powell, and has a number of Florida-based targets high on its 2014 recruiting board.
Three-star athlete Charles Nelson (Daytona Beach, Fla./Seabreeze) was added to that list Monday when he landed a scholarship offer from the Trojans -- on his birthday, no less.
"It was great," the 5-foot-9, 164-pound Nelson said. "Hearing from the coaches and talking to them was a great feeling. I haven't been talking to them for long, maybe a month back, but they told me they watched my film and liked how electric and versatile I was."
Nelson, who has close to 20 offers, said he has been told he could be used on either offense, defense or special teams at the next level. He has over 1,000 all-purpose yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games this season.
The uncertainty surrounding the USC coaching situation, Nelson said, has no impact on how he views the Trojans.
"It doesn't really affect me," said Nelson, who also has offers from Miami, Michigan State and Wisconsin. "USC is going to be USC and I'm sure they will bring in a great coach. I have never visited Los Angeles, so I would love to check it out. The coaches want me to come by this year. I'm focusing on my high school season and telling all the coaches I'll worry about official visits after the season. I don't really care how far (away) a school is. I would go anywhere. USC is a great school with good academics. It's a nice place to be at. It's gorgeous down there. That's what stands out to me."
