Three-star DE commits to Trojans
By Blair Angulo
GARDENA, Calif. -- Following months of stressful anticipation, three-star defensive end Olajuwon Tucker (Gardena, Calif./Serra) needed just a week to arrive at a decision.
Only seven days removed from when he landed a surprise scholarship offer from USC, Tucker made the call and verbally committed to the Trojans on Friday.
"I called Coach Ed Orgeron earlier today and he was jumping around," Tucker said following Serra's 36-0 victory against league rival West Hills (Calif.) Chaminade. "I was very confident about this decision."
The 6-foot-3, 214-pound prospect was often overshadowed by five-star athlete Adoree' Jackson, four-star linebacker Dwight Williams, and 2015 standouts Rasheem Green and John Houston Jr. on Serra's highly touted defense, but Tucker quickly built a reputation of his own. His ideal blend of size and speed attracted more attention from recruiters lately, but USC seemed to jump in at the perfect time.
Tucker also picked up an offer from Boise State earlier in the day and is expected to take numerous official visits before national signing day. His list of offers includes Arizona State, Colorado State, Miami and San Diego State.
The commitment gave Orgeron his second commitment since taking over for Lane Kiffin in late September. Earlier this month, the Trojans received a verbal pledge from three-star outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu (Harbor City, Calif./Narbonne) shortly after extending an offer.
With Tucker aboard, the USC recruiting class is made up of nine members, including four defensive linemen. The Trojans are expected to sign 19 prospects in the 2014 class.
