WeAreSC recruiting mailbag

By Blair Angulo

WeAreSC recruiting reporter Blair Angulo answers reader questions in his mailbag every week. Have a USC recruiting question of your own? Submit it via Twitter @WeAreSCstaff or @bangulo.

@jboyd_2: Coach Ed Orgeron and Tee Martin seem to be reaching out and offering more since Lane Kiffin was fired.

WeAreSC: That is correct. Seven offers have gone out in the three weeks since Kiffin was let go, with four of those offers going to prospects committed to other schools. It’s been a mix of no-brainers (ESPN 300 quarterback Brad Kaaya) and surprises (three-star safety Uchenna Nwosu), but the aggressive strategy appears to be paying off. Recruits seem to be reconsidering the Trojans with Kiffin gone, and the outlook might only improve once the coaching situation is sorted out.

@sean70545817: Will USC pay more attention to skill players similar to Jaydon Mickens, John Ross and De’Anthony Thomas if the next coach is a spread-type coach?

WeAreSC: USC paid plenty of attention to Thomas and Mickens in high school and was in the mix to land Ross. Mickens and Thomas were also committed to the Trojans for a long time before signing with Washington and Oregon, respectively. The recruiting strategy would vary depending on the offensive scheme, but Mickens, Ross and Thomas have proven they would fit in any style. For the next regime, it will be important to evaluate and lock up local talent. We have already seen Martin and Orgeron go after potential game-breakers such as Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco teammates Jaleel Wadood and Shay Fields Jr.

@sweetloui41: When can we expect our next commit?

WeAreSC: Recently offered offensive lineman Chris Brown (Los Angeles/Loyola) inferred he wants to make a fairly quick decision, so he would be the candidate to become the next USC commit. He comes from a family that supports the Trojans and called them the undoubted favorites when Martin and Orgeron extended the offer last week.

BStrodester: Do you see any potential SC steals from UCLA for Class of 2014?

WeAreSC: It very well could happen. Don’t be surprised if cornerback Denzel Fisher (Compton, Calif./Centennial) and receiver Jordan Lasley (Gardena, Calif./Serra) eventually flip to USC. Both are solidly committed to the Bruins now, but have indicated that they will continue to assess their options.
