Pac-12 recruiting storylines: July 19

By Erik McKinney

Another passing tournament in Huntington Beach, the Bruins landing a big target and recruits heading out of area highlight the week's news in the West.

Battle at the Beach: Part 2

Last Saturday saw the official Battle at the Beach passing tournament at Huntington Beach (Calif.) Edison, but plenty of talent will be back in the area tomorrow, as Huntington Beach High School hosts another event. All eyes will be on the underclass talent on hand, as quarterback Josh Rosen (Bellflower, Calif./St. John Bosco) will have an opportunity to back up his newly minted No. 1 ranking among quarterbacks in the 2015 class. He'll be joined by 2015 ESPN 300 recruits Keisean Lucier-South (Orange, Calif./Lutheran) and Equanimeous St. Brown (Anaheim, Calif./Servite), as well as 2015 standout receiver Jaylinn Hawkins (Buena Park, Calif./Buena Park) and 2016 quarterback K.J. Costello (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita).

UCLA in good hands

The 2014 UCLA recruiting class only has five commitments, but the Bruins are loaded at receiver. This week, Austin Roberts (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) joined a group that already featured three receivers. Roberts, a big, 6-foot-2, 217-pound target is likely to play tight end or H-back for the Bruins and helps form a physically imposing group of receivers in this class alongside Dionte Sykes (Chandler, Ariz./Chandler), Barry Ware (Corona, Calif./Centennial) and Jordan Lasley (Gardena, Calif./Serra).

Top Guns in Ohio

The 2013 FBU Top Gun camp in Ohio is this week and several West region stars are on hand. Defensive end Connor Humphreys (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) leads the 2014 group out there, and the countdown could be on for the nation's No. 245 recruit. Humphreys said he would like to narrow his list down in the coming weeks and commit soon after that. The 2015 West class is led by teammates Brady White and Trent Irwin (Newhall, Calif./Hart), a 2015 ESPN 300 quarterback/wide receiver tandem.

Whiley whittles it down

In last week's storylines, the news was Arizona tight end Trevor Wood (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral) cutting his list down to three schools. This week, it's his teammate, cornerback Tyler Whiley, trimming his list to five. Whiley, the nation's No. 70 recruit overall, said Arizona, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Tennessee and UCLA are his finalists. The Wildcats and Bruins are on the list for both players.

Trojans jump into the mix for 2015 quarterbacks

It feels as though USC has held a commitment from 2015 quarterback David Sills (Elkton, Md./Eastern Christian Academy) for much of his life, as the 6-foot-3, 177-pound signal-caller committed to Lane Kiffin in February 2010. On Thursday, the Trojans threw their hat in the ring for a couple local quarterbacks, as Rosen and Ricky Town (Ventura, Calif./St. Bonaventure) landed offers from USC. It makes sense that USC would turn its attention to the extremely talented California quarterback crop of 2015, as Kiffin's program seems to be stuck in neutral with the 2014 quarterbacks. It's likely that the Trojans will take two quarterbacks in the 2015 class, and Thursday proved that they are going to go hard after at least two big local targets.
