ESPN 300 analysis: USC Trojans

By Blair Angulo

The USC recruiting class might not be high in numbers yet, but the quality appears to be on par with what the coaching staff landed last signing day.

Jordan Poland
Jordan Poland is USC's highest-ranked committed player in the ESPN 300 at No. 159.
Of the four verbal commitments eligible for inclusion in the ESPN 300, three made the cut in the newly released list: No. 159 Jordan Poland (La Jolla, Calif./Country Day School), No. 215 Tashon Smallwood (Fresno, Calif./Central) and No. 242 Toa Lobendahn (La Habra, Calif./La Habra). The Trojans don’t have commitments in high volume, but they’re in contention for a bevy of other ESPN 300 recruits.

A couple big movers into the top 25 were offensive tackle Damian Prince (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara) and quarterback Keller Chryst (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto). Prince jumped from No. 33 to No. 18, while Chryst – who overtook recent Alabama commit David Cornwell (Norman, Okla./Norman North) as the No. 1 pocket-passer – made the leap from No. 50 to No. 21 overall.

Not everyone ascended in the rankings, though. Four-star athlete Michiah Quick (Fresno, Calif./Central) fell from No. 22 to No. 32, while four-star running back Nathan Starks (Greenwood Village, Colo./Cherry Creek), formerly the No. 142 overall prospect, dropped out of the rankings entirely.

The other notable in-state prospects include cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (Gardena, Calif./Serra) at No. 5, tight end Tyler Luatua (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) at No. 37, offensive guard Damien Mama (Bellflower, Calif./St. John Bosco) at No. 67, tight end Bryce Dixon (Ventura, Calif./St. Bonaventure) at No. 104, running back Joe Mixon (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) at No. 137, defensive end Malik Dorton (Bellflower, Calif./St. John Bosco) at No. 205, linebacker D.J. Calhoun (El Cerrito, Calif./El Cerrito) at No. 220 and defensive tackle Matt Dickerson (San Mateo, Calif./Junipero Serra) at No. 291.

Former USC offensive tackle commit Casey Tucker (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) checked in at No. 39 overall.

Two of the more highly touted targets include five-star athlete Speedy Noil (New Orleans, La./Edna Karr) at No. 8 overall and receiver Ermon Lane (Homestead, Fla./Homestead Senior) at No. 25.
