With the news today that safety Su'a Cravens from Vista Murrieta (Calif.) has given a verbal commitment to the Trojans, the USC recruiting class got another huge boost to an already terrific group.

Of the eight early commits to USC in the class of 2013, six are listed in the ESPN 150 rankings, but it is Cravens who could end up being the headliner. Not only is he an elite prospect who can play multiple positions, but there is an aura about him that draws in other players. It says something when you go to a recruiting camp and the other players are asking about Cravens or talking about watching his highlight tape on the 'net -- and that has happened often this year.

When you're the USC Trojans and you have that kind of player in your backyard, it's always important to land him. No matter how much national recruiting success the Trojans might have from time to time, the homegrown talent is always going to be the backbone of the program. Of course, it helps when that player grows up dreaming of playing for USC, as was the case with Cravens. Su'a might have dallied with the recruiting process but those around him have long been saying that he was a done deal to the Trojans.

USC is getting a rare player with size, instincts, football genes and leadership ability. His impact on the USC recruiting class should be immediate, as other recruits definitely will discuss his verbal at upcoming events such as the Rising Stars Camp and The Opening. Don't be surprised if Cravens inserts himself into that process either, as he has spent time this spring talking with other USC commitments about the class they are putting together for their future team. The only difference now is that Su'a will be able to tell other recruits that he has made his choice, and he will be a member of the USC class of 2013.
