The USC Trojans have reached the midway point of their season and, though a perfect record is no longer possible, the common reaction among Class of 2013 commits is positive. There’s overwhelming optimism within the recruiting class that the Trojans will finish the year strong, win the Pac-12 and have the opportunity to compete for the BCS crown.

The consensus among recruits is that the Trojans have struggled to maintain consistent offensive play, while the defense has carried the squad to its 5-1 start. USC ranks 25th nationally in total defense (331.5 yards per game), 27th in scoring defense (18.5 points), 48th in scoring offense (32.33 points) and 57th in total offense (415.17 yards).

Here’s a look at what some USC commits are saying:

Four-star quarterback Max Browne (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline): "It’s not a perfect season, but they’re in a good position. ... They’ve done a lot of good things. It’s comforting for a quarterback to see their defense do really well and have a good running game. Everyone knows about [Matt] Barkley and the two wideouts [Marqise Lee and Robert Woods]. They’re doing great things but have some stuff to improve on. The Stanford loss was tough, but I think everyone’s kind of put their finger on the Nov. 3 date, the Oregon game. That should be fun."

Four-star safety Su'a Cravens (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta): "The coaches are doing a great job. That's why we all want to go there."

Four-star running back Justin Davis (Stockton, Calif./Lincoln): “The defense has been lockdown, but it's just that the offense needs to pick it up in some areas. I don't see them losing another game this year."

Four-star offensive lineman Nico Falah (Bellflower, Calif./St. John Bosco): "They are getting wins, and that's what matters. I still think they can win it all if they go undefeated the rest of the season."

Four-star defensive end Kylie Fitts (Redlands, Calif./Redlands East Valley): "I think the season has been going great. They have faced their little hiccups, but the Trojans always know how to face adversity. They have a couple of tough games coming up, and I think they will come out on top. And if they do that, I believe they will be in the national championship!"

Four-star receiver Sebastian LaRue (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica): “I look at the USC season as sort of a roller coaster this year. They have great games, but they have others where they really struggle. They have tons of talent and great coaching, which wins them a lot of games. The defense has played great this year, but the offense is nowhere near where I thought they would be at this point in the season. They have a couple of huge tests coming up soon, so we'll see how they respond."

Four-star receiver Eldridge Massington (Mesquite, Texas/West Mesquite): "I think the season is going great. I think we have a shot at winning a bowl game. I'm very excited to see them play Oregon and Notre Dame. It will be fun to watch them."

Four-star offensive lineman Khaliel Rodgers (Elkton, Md./Eastern Christian Academy): "I think we are just as strong as we were heading into the second half of the season last year. We are fighting harder each game, and I believe we will be in the BCS national championship game."
