Momentum Changer

11/13/2011

No doubt the biggest play of the game was the Kyle Negrete fake punt. That play was perfect on so many levels.

First of all, great play call. The Trojans were looking for a certain punt defense from the Huskies, they saw it, called the fake and correctly executed the play as designed.

Then you had the run by Negrete. This is a guy who was MVP of his team at Clovis West (Calif.) HS as a safety with 109 tackles and eight picks. Clovis West is synonymous with tough football players. The USC coaches made it clear that they wanted him to slide once he got a first down, but Negrete wasn’t having any part of that.

“They told me to slide and I told them no way,” Negrete said. “I haven’t seen green grass like that since high school.”

Negrete finished off the run by crashing into the defender after 35 yards, causing the USC sideline to erupt. Punters aren’t supposed to do that, but Negrete did. The play completely changed the energy level of the team and the Trojans went on a 30-7 scoring run over the next 20 minutes of the game to put things away.
