Kiffin hasn't stopped thinking about loss

LOS ANGELES -- Lane Kiffin hasn't stopped thinking about his USC Trojans' 21-14 loss to Stanford earlier this month, and the team's bye this week provided a perfect opportunity for another look back from the head coach's perspective.

Kiffin called that game a "debacle" in passing in a Thursday radio interview on 710 ESPN, and he expanded on that thought after USC's Friday evening practice.

"It was a debacle," Kiffin said, "from the standpoint of we feel that we should have won that game with our team, if we play the way that we can play. And we didn't."

The Trojans were without center Khaled Holmes and kicker Andre Heidari against the Cardinal, and Kiffin again mentioned that Friday, as he has every time he has discussed the loss. But he also added more context to his thoughts on the game, taking more blame and expressing regret for his play-calling.

"In coaching, you're just like players," Kiffin said Friday. "Every game's not the same. You're gonna have some games that you make better calls and get in rhythm and I didn't feel like I did really well in that game with our guys.

"You'd love to have it back, but you can't."

Added Kiffin, who said Friday he didn't think the Trojans' hype was a factor in the loss: "We played in bigger games than that before -- it's not like that was the biggest game ever or anything."

Interestingly, Stanford was upset on Thursday night by Pac-12 North rival Washington in Seattle.
Kiffin said the outcome -- a 17-13 Huskies win -- "really didn't surprise him."

He said he would've predicted a Washington upset if asked about the game in advance, in large part because of Stanford signal-caller Josh Nunes' road inexperience.

"I thought it would be very low scoring, very close and Washington would probably pull it off because they were at home and it was Stanford's quarterback's first road game," Kiffin said.
