Scouting California:

California, under 10th-year head coach Jeff Tedford, is coming off a 35-28 road loss at No. 12 Ohio State in which they surrendered a 72-yard TD game-winning pass in the final 4 minutes. The Golden Bears’ offense is directed by senior QB Zach Maynard (60-of-90, 66.7%, 754 yds, 4 TD, 2 int in 2012). Top ground gainers are senior TBs Isi Sofele (45 tcb, 212 yds, 4.7 avg, 1 TD in 2012, plus 5 rec, 53 yds, 10.6 avg) and C.J. Anderson (23 tcb, 125 yds, 5.4 avg, 1 TD in 2012, plus 5 rec, 77 yds, 15.4 avg). Junior WR Keenan Allen (20 rec, 216 yds, 10.8 avg, 1 TD in 2012, plus 7 PR, 124 avg, 17.7 avg, 1 TD), a 2011 All-Pac-12 first teamer who is 14th nationally in punt returns (17.7, second in Pac-12) and tied for 24th in receptions (6.7, tied for fourth in Pac-12), and first-year freshman WR Chris Harper (15 rec, 183 yds, 12.2 avg, 2 TD in 2012) are the leading pass catchers. Allen is sixth on the school’s career receptions list (164).

The Golden Bears’ defense is tied for 23rd nationally in tackles for loss (7.7, third in Pac-12). Among Cal’s tackle leaders are junior CB Steve Williams (24 tac, 1.5 for loss, 1 int, 1 dfl in 2012), senior ILB Robert Mullins (23 tac, 2 for loss in 2012) and senior S Josh Hill (23 tac, 0.5 for loss in 2012), while senior ILB J.P. Hurrell (8 tac, 2.5 for loss, 2.5 sack in 2012) is tied for 18th nationally in sacks (1.0, tied for second in Pac-12).
