USC hard to bring down

NEXT LEVEL: USC gained 224 of its 394 receiving yards after the catch against Hawaii, the most yards after the catch for any AP top-25 team in Week 1. Marqise Lee had 138 yards after the catch, including 69 on his 75-yard touchdown reception on the first play of the game. The 224 yards after the catch was the Trojans’ second most since the start of the 2009 season. They had 234 YAC against UCLA in their final game of last season.

Don’t blitz Barkley

NEXT LEVEL: Matt Barkley has thrown 35 touchdowns since the start of 2010 season when opponents send five or more pass rushers. During that time period, Barkley has had seven games in which he has thrown at least three touchdown passes, including a four-touchdown game last season against Syracuse.

--In Week 1, Hawaii blitzed on six of Barkley’s first nine pass attempts. Barkley completed four of those passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns. From that point forward, Hawaii blitzed on just 13 of USC’s 32 attempts.

Marqise Lee’s emergence

NEXT LEVEL: In Week 9 of last season, Marqise Lee emerged as a true second option on the outside. Lee caught seven passes for 94 yards and a touchdown in that game against Stanford. From that point forward, Lee has averaged over two times as many receiving yards per game than teammate Robert Woods and has emerged as Matt Barkley’s primary downfield threat.
