Halftime Analysis: USC 20 - Cal 0

10/13/2011

Key Stat - USC with four turnovers

The Trojans defense recovered two early Cal fumbles to set the tone and added two interceptions. Chris Galippo had an interception deep in Golden Bears territory to set up a score while Dion Bailey got a pick in the end zone at the end of the half after the best Cal drive of the night. The Trojans were able to capitalize enough to help build a 20-0 halftime lead thanks in part to a Cal offense that didn't get much going until that late 2nd-quarter drive.

Turning point - Marqise Lee touchdown

The Trojans offense had only managed three points in the first quarter and Matt Barkley was off to a shaky start until he hit Lee with a 39-yard touchdown catch in the 2nd quarter to make the score 10-0. Lee has been the deep threat in the Trojans passing game tonight, although he left the game with a wrist injury on the touchdown catch and has yet to return.

What USC needs to do

Keep doing what it is doing on defense. USC is putting a lot of pressure on Cal quarterback Zach Maynard and it is hitting him often. The result was a shaky half with no points on the board for the Bears. If the USC defense can keep that up in the 2nd half, the Trojans win the game.

What Cal needs to do

Eliminate mistakes. The Trojans are leading 20-0 but it could be a lot worse. Barkley is not sharp tonight, but the Bears have been unable to take advantage because they have offensive issues of their own.
