Salesian duo hoping history won't repeat

USC assistant coach Keith Heyward last week made a recruiting stop at nearby Los Angeles Salesian, which has produced a number of Pac-12 prospects in recent years.

The knock on the small private school, though, has been the absence of quality competition. Wins have arrived in bunches against lower-tier opponents, including a first-ever CIF Southern Section championship last year, prompting a recent vote into the rigorous Pac-5 Division, which Salesian successfully appealed to avoid the likes of Los Angeles Loyola, Gardena Serra and La Puente Bishop Amat.

Salesian had its top three recruits -- Rodney Carr, Jamardre Cobb and Marquis Ware -- sign with Arizona in the 2014 class. The year before, defensive back Jermaine Kelly inked with Washington over a last-day offer from the Trojans, citing his relationship with Heyward, then a Huskies assistant, as one of the reasons for leaving town.

Heyward was back on Salesian's campus last week to check on Kelly’s brother, Class of 2015 wide receiver Jeremy Kelly, and ESPN 300 linebacker Kyahva Tezino, among others.
