One day later, the USC Trojans’ 2012 recruiting class still registers as an overall success for Lane Kiffin and his staff. The 12 signees and five early enrollees will be a big part of the future of this program. WeAreSC hands out awards for the 2012 class.
Biggest Surprise -- DT Leonard Williams (Daytona Beach, Fla./Mainland)
Williams was on the Trojans radar throughout the recruiting process, but kept USC a notch below Florida and Auburn on his list. A late visit to Florida State opened his eyes to the fact that other schools could wow him, and an even later visit to USC helped jump the Trojans into his top group. When Lane Kiffin, Monte Kiffin and Ed Orgeron visited him last week and extolled the virtues of playing in a pure 4-3 defense, Williams was sold. Even so, early chatter on Wednesday had Williams headed to the Gators, so when he announced for the Trojans, it certainly caught some off guard.
Instant Impact -- S Gerald Bowman (Woodland Hills, Calif./Pierce College)
While Williams has a chance to contribute right away on the defensive line, Bowman will come in determined to see time in the safety rotation or on special teams. With T.J. McDonald returning, there is no open spot in the secondary, but Bowman won’t have an issue competing with both McDonald and Jawanza Starling at safety. He is a big hitter who should allow the Trojans to rotate at the spot without losing any ability.
