Chat wrap: DB debate, football improves

May, 2, 2012
5/02/12
8:30
AM ET
HornsNation's William Wilkerson stopped by SportsNation to chat about the NFL draft, Texas football and of course some recruiting updates.

Here are some of the highlights:

Spence (Dallas)

How soon do you see Davis committing? Are our chances with Wilson good since we are in final two (Oregon and Texas)? Been too long since a committ. I am going crazy... I hate offseason.

William Wilkerson

Been a little slow on the recruiting front, eh? I know he is tied up with track right now; qualified for the state meet. So i definitely don't see it happening before that is over. I do, however, presume he'll make his decision before next season starts. I think Texas' chances are decent with Wilson simply because of the proximity to home. I think he'd already be committed to Oregon if it weren't so far away. He took an extended trip out there weeks ago to make sure he could handle it. But a few days is much different than a few years. That being said, I know he doesn't like the idea of being a "DJ Monroe" guy for Texas. He wants to be an every-down back, and there might not be room at Texas for that.

Nicholas (CC,Tx)

Long shot here, if Gray comes right out of the gates and out performs Berg and Brown without question, or vice versus, do you see us nominating an exclusive back in our future or are we sticking with the plan of watering down our stars?

William Wilkerson

No. I think this offense will continue with the three-back set regardless of if another RB begins to shine. Now, if that back completely dominates, eh, surely he'll get more carries. But all three are so explosive in their own rights I just find it hard to believe that Harsin-Applewhite wouldn't find ways to get them involved.

David (Mansfield, Ohio)

After the latest DB update it mentioned that Texas may be the leader for M. Harris, what are the chances that we land him out of those offered thus far? And if we do not gain a commit from V. Bell who will they offer next, Miles or Baltimore? And after being in the lead for Davis and Smith, how does Texas stand with them now?

William Wilkerson

I have always thought Texas' chances with Harris were better than average, and I think they'll get no worse than that. I'd put Texas up there with Florida as the teams to beat. I'll lean toward Miles. I think GB ends up in the SEC. Smith likes Alabama a whole lot right now. I think Texas is in some trouble. Not so much with Smith.

Stephen (Seattle, WA)

What do you think will be the biggest difference from last years success to this years?

William Wilkerson

First and foremost just the comfort level the players and coaches have with each other. Always difficult for a new coaching staff to come in. Second, I think Texas simply has better players on this roster than last.

If you didn't get your question answered, tune in Friday and send in your questions to Sean Adams who will be chatting at 11 a.m. CT.

Chat wrap: Draft talk and recruiting

April, 25, 2012
4/25/12
1:30
PM ET
Carter Strickland answered questions from Texas fans nationwide hitting on the draft, a litlte football and some recruiting updates.

Here are some of the best questions:

Ez 28 (Davis, CA)

If Maurice Smith and Marcell Harris don't commit, who do the coaches go after then? Any more news on Samples?

Carter Strickland

Well it does look like smith is leaning toward Bama but there is a long way to go in that battle. Harris has remained neutral about where he stands but again he is in Florida so luring him away could be tricky. There are still guys out there like Vonn Bell, although he is a Georgia lean, Davis down in Bastrop, Kameron Miles at Mesquite, George Baltimore at Mansfield, Cole Luke in Arizona. so Texas has options. Samples is going to be a wait and see guy.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Longhorn do you think will be a Great NFL Rookie in 2012?

Carter Strickland

I really don't see this class as making much of an impact in the NFL as rookies. I think Acho could be good special teams player and maybe he makes a highlight there. But other than that it is a pretty flat class.

Nicholas74230 (CC, tx)

Out of the 3 backs Texas will have this season in Berg, Brown and Gray, how do you see the carries being shared? Do you see a 3500 rushing yard season??

Carter Strickland

I like Bergeron because i think he is going to be more durable. I see maybe 2,400 yards out of the run game in 2012. Could be more. But that is basically 80o yards a player. That is realistic.

ron king (oklahoma)

if ash struggles how many games do you see texas winning?.......and how good is tevin jackson??

Carter Strickland

I like Cobbs better than Jackson. Just more speed and can do more in the blitzing packages Diaz likes. Tevin is a good backer he just is not quite as good an athlete as Cobbs. If Ash struggles Texas wins eight. If he excels they win 10.

jackson (texas)

i know there is talent on the defense but just how good do you think they will be?...dominating?

Carter Strickland

They were the No. 11 defense in 2011. They are better this year and do not have to face RGIII. I'm thinking top 10 at least.

Stephen (Anderson)

5 tries... Who do you take?Bergeron running over Edmond or Edmond making the stop?

Carter Strickland

Edmond. Bigger (260), longer arms and stronger.

Sean Adams chat wrap

April, 23, 2012
4/23/12
10:00
AM ET
Sean Adams stopped by SportsNation to chat about the Longhorns, the NFL draft, and much more.

Here is what you missed:

Michael Twining (Austin)

Is Garrett Gilbert going to make us jealous next year?

Sean Adams

I don't know if he is going to make Texas fans jealous but I do believe that he is going to play well. Sometimes a fresh start is huge for people in sports and in life. As a fan of the student-athlete, I'm excited to see if he can live up to his own promise and become the type of quarterback he wants to be. Forget what everyone else wants him to be. He needs to be strong and good for himself.

Terry (Austin)

Best QB in the Big 12?

Sean Adams

That one is pretty easy right now. Geno Smith had huge numbers at West Virginia last year. 4,385 yards, 31 TDs, 7 INTs, 65.8 percent. He has to be the No. 1 right now and I would expect him to be first team All-Big 12.

Scott (Austin)

We heard before the 2010 and 2011 seasons that Texas would pound the ball in the running game, and that seemed to be true against weaker teams, but was unreliable against better competition. Should we be worried they will put up 400 yds against Tech and KU but have a lot of third and long against OU and the top tier? Why will it be different this year?

Sean Adams

The offensive line will be better and the RB's will be healthy. I think the team will be more consistent because the pieces are in place. I can't say enough how much the offensive line will be better than previous years, even 2009 when Texas played for the national championship.

Lake (Vallejo, CA)

What are your thoughts on Brock Huard's ranking of QB U?

Sean Adams

Love Brock but he is more of a Pac 12 homer than me and that is hard to be. Having USC, Stanford and Oregon on that list is funny. USC is number 1, easily. Amazes me that he left off Texas and Oklahoma. Arkansas can probably make an argument as well.

Nick (Cal)

Is Texas gonna remain part of the Big 12 for the future?

Sean Adams

I think they will be part of the conversation for a while. The situation is great for Texas and as Oklahoma continues to build its brand, they will continue to branch in the media space. The dollars are right, the autonomy is right and Texas will be in the Big 12 for a long time.

Chat wrap: Texas and the ESPN 150

April, 18, 2012
4/18/12
3:00
PM ET
William Wilkerson stopped by SportsNation to chat about the release of the ESPN 150 and Texas recruiting.

If you didn't get your question answered, send them in to us in the HornsNation mailbag or you can always hit us up in the forum.

Here is some of the best from the chat:

David (Mansfield Ohio)

It’s hard to say whether or not Smith really has Bama as his top school over his "dream school" Texas, or if he is just making Texas sweat it out after waiting so long to offer. After this happening what are the chances that Texas offers in-state safeties Baltimore and/or Miles in case they miss on both Bell and Harris? Also how serious of a shot does Texas have at Nkemdiche since he wants to visit and knows Searels? Or is this replay of QB Winston from last year?

William Wilkerson

The Smith situation is hard to read. I think Texas waited a little too long to offer him, but they had their reasons for waiting. The allure of A-Day (Bama's spring game) may linger for a while but I think he will ultimately decide with his "dream school." As for offering Baltimore and/or Miles. Balt's mom wants him to go to Texas. She loved the Longhorns. But there hasn't been much communication between the two sides and I'm not sure how kindly he is going to take to being a "fall back" plan in case the national guys don't commit. Same with Harris. As for Kin-dee-chee, he wants to visit. But I don't think much would come from it.
