Staff picks: Iowa State vs. Texas

By HornsNation staff

Texas 42, Iowa State 17
Texas will play with tremendous emotion on Saturday. The Longhorns will hear about the legacy of Darrell K Royal and start to think about a legacy of their own. For a game that two weeks ago was being sold at a discount rate, this will probably end up being one of the most remembered games, not only for 2012 but in the last decade or two. Texas will run the ball and will be able to expose a weakened front seven. Texas will have a lot of success on offense and their 'newish' defense will put a lot of pressure on the Iowa State offense that will cause turnovers. Texas follows up the Texas Tech win well and continues to build confidence.

Texas 41, Iowa State 24
Iowa State played Kansas State very close, kept up with Oklahoma for a half and hasn't given up more than 38 in a game this season. They'll give Texas a good fight for a few quarters but don't have enough bullets to pull off the upset. A goosebumps-good pregame tribute to Darrell K Royal will ensure the Longhorns don't play a sleepy first quarter, but they won't truly get on a roll until the second half.

Texas 38, Iowa State 21
Texas finally had all three phases of the game working against a decent opponent last week. Now that the Longhorns have figured out what it takes to beat a team ranked in the top 20, they should have little problem taking care of a team not even close to the top 20.

Texas 56, Iowa State 24
On Sept. 8, 2001, the Longhorns honored defensive tackle Cole Pittman, who was killed in a car accident in February 2001, in truly unbelievable fashion by scoring exactly 44 points (his number) in a win over North Carolina. Playing with heavy hearts on Saturday, I believe Texas will find a way to do the same for Darrell K. Royal and score 56 points in honor of 1956, his first season with the program. The Longhorns will play one of their most complete games of the season, led by Johnathan Gray's third straight 100-yard rushing game, and head into their Thanksgiving Day showdown against TCU with a ton of momentum.
