Athletic 2015 DB Dunning has new offer

By Damon Sayles

To say it’s been a pretty good week for 2015 safety Justin Dunning (Whitehouse, Texas/Whitehouse) would be an understatement.

After an impressive showing at the East Texas Sports Network Combine on Sunday in Tyler, Texas, Dunning went to bed Thursday night with a huge smile on his face. Dunning late Thursday picked up a Texas offer -- one of the offers he said he was hoping for.

“I like Texas a lot,” Dunning said. “That [offer] really put them in a better position with me.”

An extremely athletic, 6-foot-3, 200-pound defensive back, Dunning was present for Texas’ sophomore day in March. He’s been a fan of the Longhorns since he was younger, citing the program’s tradition and respected reputation across the state.

“They were the team I watched as a kid,” Dunning said. “I used to love watching Vince Young.”

Longhorns offensive line coach Stacy Searels and defensive backs coach Duane Akina have been Dunning’s primary recruiting contacts. Dunning said he will attend Texas’ minicamp on June 2.

Dunning is coming off an outstanding performance at the ETSN Combine, where he ran a laser-tested, 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds and recorded a combine-best vertical leap of 40.4 inches. He also broad-jumped 124 inches -- which equates to more than 12 feet. Dunning was named the defensive backs MVP of the combine, and he was in the running for overall defensive MVP honors.

Dunning is coming off a sophomore season when he had 61 tackles, five interceptions, five pass breakups and three fumble recoveries. He also was an all-state selection.

In addition to the Texas offer, Dunning holds a Texas Tech offer that he picked up during the Red Raiders’ spring game weekend in April. Additionally, Dunning is receiving high interest from Texas A&M, Baylor, Oklahoma and LSU.

While the Longhorns' offer is intriguing, Dunning said he would take his time with the process and continue to weigh all options.
