Tales From The Road: Texas

By William Wilkerson

Every Wednesday, HornsNation will take a look at Texas' week in recruiting in Tales From The Road.

This week’s targets: The Longhorns had the luxury of having several prospects come to them over the weekend due to the UIL State Track and Field Meet in Austin. Some of the unofficial visitors included Baylor commitment Davion Hall (Texarkana, Texas/Liberty-Eylau), Alabama commitment Deionte Thompson (Orange, Texas/West Orange Stark), K.D. Cannon (Mount Pleasant, Texas/Mount Pleasant), Jay Bradford (Splendora, Texas/Splendora), Ishmael Zamora (Alief, Texas/Elsik), Koda Martin (Manvel, Texas/Manvel), Elton Dyer (Houston/South Houston), Arrion Springs (San Antonio/Roosevelt), Blake Blackmar (Houston/Clear Lake) and Kevin Shorter (Newton, Texas/Newton).

Area of interest: The Longhorns are using Stacy Searels’ connections as the Georgia Bulldogs' former offensive line coach to make some headway in the Peach State. In 2014 alone, Texas has offered Georgian’s Lorenzo Carter (Norcross, GA./Norcross), Andrew Williams (McDonough, GA/Eagles Landing Christian Academy) Elisha Shaw (Tucker, GA/Tucker), Raekwon McMillan (Hinesville, GA/Liberty County) Orlando Brown Jr. (Duluth, GA/Peachtree Ridge), Nick Chubb (Cedartown, GA/Cedartown), Adam Choice (Thomasville, GA/Thomas County Central High) and Demarre Kitt (Tyrone, GA/Sandy Creek).

Prospect performance: The UIL State Track and Field Meet was held on the campus of the University of Texas over the weekend, and was loaded with several Longhorns targets. Here is a look at those who finished with a medal: 2013 Texas commitment Antwuan Davis (Bastrop), second in 4A 200-meter dash, third in 4A 100-meter dash; 2015 Texas offer Kendall Sheffield (Fort Bend Marshall), second in 4A 300-meter hurdles, second in 4A 110-hurdles, second in 4A 4x100; 2014 Texas offer Tony Brown (Beaumont Ozen), first in 4A 110-meter hurdles, second in 4A 100-meter dash; 2015 RB Jay Bradford (Splendora), first in 3A long jump/first in 3A 100-meter dash; 2014 WR Ishmael Zamora (Alief Elsik), second in 5A 300-meter hurdles, first in 110-meter hurdles; 2015 RB Jamycal Hasty (Longview), second in 5A 4x100.

Word on the street: In HornsNation’s forum “The Tower,” Mesoseb asked why the Longhorns offered 2014 DE/OLB Victor Evans (Dallas/Skyline). Texas has scouted Evans for some time and likely decided to pull the trigger for a few reasons. One, he can play. Despite an offers list void of power programs, he is a hybrid DE/OLB who can run. Always need those types in the pass happy Big 12 where tackling in space is vital. Also, UT is going to take four DE’s in 2014 so they can afford to take “risks” if you will.

What to watch: The conclusion of the high school track season concluded over the weekend with several of Texas’ top targets making a haul at the state track meet. It was another momentous weekend for the Longhorns coaching staff, which was able to get several players on campus for unofficial visits. Now that that event is finished, the road to the 2013 Texas State 7-on-7 Tournament in Leander will begin with the first batch of qualifying tournaments on May 25. They’ll take place in Colleyville, Round Rock, Houston and Manvel. The state tournament is July 11-13 at the Southwest Williamson County Regional Park in Leander.
