Q&A: 2014 athlete Trevion Roberts

By William Wilkerson

It’s no secret that the state of Texas in 2014 is as loaded at the cornerback position as it has been in a very long time.

The Longhorns have already scouted and handed out offers to their top targets, but are also in the process of further evaluating recruits that could be in line for an offer down the road.

One of those players that Texas is keeping tabs on is Houston Eisenhower athlete Trevion Roberts.

He spent last season handing the ball off but found out the Longhorns would have different plans for him if the two sides agreed that he’d spend his college days in Austin.

We caught up with Roberts, who is 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, to get his take on where he stands with Texas right now:

HornsNation: How did Texas get in touch with you?

Trevion Roberts: Back in the spring Coach [Oscar] Giles came down during spring practice. I was really working hard to go into the season. He told me to keep my head up and keep doing what I’m doing and that they were looking at me. So I kept striding. They got in touch with my coach and told him that they wanted me to come down for junior day.

HN: What was junior day like at Texas?

Roberts: It was all falling into place for me. The campus is nice. The players are very sociable. I love the coaching staff. It is a very great environment to be in.

HN: What kind of conversations did you have with UT because I know you played wide receiver as a sophomore and then QB last year? Where do they want you to play?

Roberts: Talking with my recruiting coach, he said they are loaded at quarterback coming into 2014. So they really want me to be a DB or WR. I would love to play DB actually. In crucial times of the game I would play DB here. Playing DB wouldn’t be too much out of my comfort zone.

HN: How did you like playing DB in those situations?

Roberts: I loved it. I loved every minute of it because, as a quarterback, you don’t get too many opportunities to play defense.

HN: Did you talk with Duane Akina at junior day?

Roberts: I did and I told him when I come down for camp that is where I was going to play. I am going to be with the DBs most of the time.

HN: Do you practice DB technique at all or will you just go down to the camp and wing it?

Roberts: I am in the middle because we are getting ready for spring football. I do some things on my own like back-pedaling skills and reading coverages that can help me. I love the position. I’m ready to go out there and show what I got.

HN: How much do you and Duke (teammate and Texas commit Donald Catalon) talk about playing at the same college?

Roberts: We would love to play at the same place. Me and Duke are like brothers. We have been playing against each other since eighth grade, then we found out we’d be playing with each other in high school. We really love it. We are really cool.

HN: Is Texas the only school going after you right now?

Roberts: TCU is in the mix. But I haven’t heard too much from them. UT is the only one that I’ve heard from.
