Top HS playoff games with Longhorns ties
By William Wilkerson
There is never a good week to lose in the playoffs, but taking an L this weekend would really sting.
The winner of each of these games will advance to play for their respective state championships next week at Cowboys Stadium. Here are four games that Longhorns fans should keep a particular eye on.
4A Region I semifinal | Denton Guyer vs. Tyler John Tyler
7:30 p.m. Friday at Midlothian How they got here: Guyer defeated Birdville 52-42; John Tyler beat Frisco Centennial 38-24.
Players of interest: 2014 Texas QB commitment Jerrod Heard (Guyer); 2013 TCU OG commitment Patrick Morris (Guyer); 2013 Oklahoma State WR commitment Fred Ross Jr., (John Tyler).
The game is really slowing down for Heard, who accounted for five touchdowns in a 10-point win over Birdville last week. He scored on runs of 11 and 8 yards, and threw touchdowns of 43, 6 and 3 yards, respectively. He’ll have to be on his game on Friday, as Ross is one of the best receivers in the state.
4A Region II semifinal | Lancaster vs. Wichita Falls Rider
7:30 p.m. Friday at Northwest ISD Stadium How they got here: Lancaster defeated Mesquite Poteet 21-13; Rider beat Wolfforth Frenship 33-7.
Players of interest: 2013 Washington commitment and former Longhorns defensive end commitment Daeshon Hall (Lancaster); 2014 Texas A&M athlete commitment and Texas offer Nick Harvey (Lancaster); 2014 Texas wide receiver target Nick Alexander (Lancaster).
Yes, Harvey has committed to Texas A&M, but he is such a special talent that it’s hard to imagine the Longhorns giving up on him this early. Harvey scored on touchdown runs of 14 and 12 yards against Poteet.
5A Region II semifinal | Katy vs. Cibolo Steele
2 p.m. Saturday at Waco’s Floyd Casey Stadium How they got here: Katy defeated Cypress Ranch 70-21; Cibolo Steele beat San Antonio Brandeis 28-12.
Players to watch: 2013 Nebraska RB commitment Adam Taylor (Katy); 2014 RB Justin Stockton.
Taylor could be a running back that Texas looks at if it chooses to recruit another one in 2013. He has 2,166 rushing yards on 242 carries and 36 touchdowns this season. Stockton has emerged as the premiere running back in San Antonio this season. He rushed 12 times for 202 yards and two touchdowns against Brandeis. Texas’ history with Steele could keep Stockton on the Longhorns’ radar.
5A Region I semifinal | DeSoto vs. Allen
6 p.m. Saturday at SMU’s Ford Stadium How they got here: DeSoto defeated Southlake Carroll 49-45; Allen beat Dallas Skyline 37-17.
Players of interest: 2013 Northwestern OL commitment Brad North (Allen); 2013 Oregon ATH commitment Dontre Wilson; 2014 WR Chris Lacy
There aren’t necessarily any Texas targets in this one (even though Texas has offered Wilson, he seems set with Oregon), but it’s just too good of a game to leave off this list. What a treat this one is going to be. Both teams have endured perhaps the toughest region in the country to get one win away from the state championship game. DeSoto squeaked by Southlake Carroll despite five rushing touchdowns and a passing touchdown from Texas A&M commitment Kenny Hill. Wilson scored on a 28-yard run and a 76-yard pass from Desmon White. He even played a little defense. Allen somewhat cruised by a loaded Skyline team.
