Raulerson will start out at DE for Texas
By William Wilkerson
The question of which position ESPN 150 prospect Jake Raulerson (Celina, Texas/Celina) is going to play once he gets to Texas was finally answered this weekend.
Raulerson, in speaking with Longhorns coaches on his official visit, said he will start out at defensive end.
“I said, 'Be straight up with me; if you think I can play, then tell me,' ” Raulerson said. “They said they think I can come in and have an impact. They said, 'You are not being redshirted and to be ready to play.' ”
Knowing that, Raulerson keyed in on the defensive ends when the recruits watched practice.
“I was watching Shiro Davis, Hassan Ridgeway, Reggie Wilson just get after it,” he said. “The quickness they have in their hand drills. That is one thing I am going to work on -- quick hands and feet.”
Raulerson will get a jump-start on honing his defensive end skills in January. He’ll move to Austin on Jan. 8 and enroll in the spring.
Watching practice was one of the many highlights for Raulerson. Others included breakfast at Mack Brown’s house Sunday morning, a trip to the Longhorn Network and dinner at Vince Young’s Steakhouse.
“I had the filet mignon,” Raulerson said. “I dominated it. It was awesome.”
During one of the sessions, Raulerson said the coaches spoke about all coming back next season to see that the program gets back to where it needs to be.
“They are just saying that we are so close to being really good,” he said. “They just need us there because we can really help win a championship. We are close. We just need guys like us to come in and help out.”
