ESPN Watch List cornerback Nick Watkins (Dallas/Bishop Dunne) had planned on attending the Red River Rivalry showdown between Texas and Oklahoma. Unfortunately, he was admittedly tardy in making a request for tickets. Rather than enjoying the Cotton Bowl atmosphere, he watched the game on television.
“I didn’t call Oklahoma early enough,” he said. “I was so focused on getting ready for our game on Friday, I guess it just kind of slipped my mind.”
Watkins said Oklahoma’s defense was very impressive in the 62-31 rout over Texas, but he added that the two programs -- both of which have offered -- are still in the same boat as the other programs that have offered. Watkins has offers from heavyweights such as Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Notre Dame and Ohio State.
“I was expecting a shootout to the last quarter,” Watkins said of Saturday’s game, “but Oklahoma really got the best of them.”
Watkins, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound cornerback considered one of the elite in the 2014 class, likes both Texas and Oklahoma. He gave the programs points for not only their winning traditions but also because of their ability to send defensive backs to the NFL. Watkins, however, said he has been in touch more with the Longhorns.
“I’ve talked to [recruiting coordinator] Coach [Bruce] Chambers from Texas, but I don’t have a number for Oklahoma,” Watkins said. “I don’t even know if they know I’m interested. I’m interested in both.”
Watkins said he is planning on making the trip to Austin, Texas, for Saturday’s Texas-Baylor game. He also made it clear that he is wide open with his process, as all schools are on equal playing ground.
